(Oh boy.)
TTC launches new wayfinding pilot at six stations ahead of FIFA World Cup 2026TM this summer

May 5, 2026

With the FIFA World Cup 2026TM less than 40 days away, the TTC has launched a pilot project that will make it easier for customers to find their way through some of the busiest subway stations.

The pilot introduces a new alpha-numeric identification system for station exits, transfer points, and other key locations. Each exit will now be marked with a simple code—such as “A” or “A 1”— designed to make subway stations easier to navigate, improve transfers, and help visitors and daily riders move through the space more confidently.

The new system will use simple alphabetical zones and pedestrian icons to help customers pinpoint their street-level destinations. For example, at Bathurst Station, the Bathurst St. side becomes Zone A, while the Markham St. side becomes Zone B. Each zone is linked to nearby landmarks, street corners, and transit connections, making it easier for customers to choose the most appropriate exit.

Six high-traffic stations were selected for the initial pilot: Bathurst, Dufferin, Bloor-Yonge, Union, St Andrew, and King. These stations are important transfer points and will be popular locations during the FIFA World Cup 2026TM.

With thousands of visitors expected this summer, improved navigation will help reduce congestion and keep transit and pedestrian traffic moving safely and efficiently.

Customers will begin noticing new yellow directional signage in stations beginning today, as well as updated signage listing local destinations and corresponding exit codes. This information will also be integrated in the TTC’s public data, allowing third-party transit apps to guide riders directly to a specific entrance/exit.

The pilot will operate from June to September 2026. During this period, the TTC will gather customer feedback and evaluate how well the new system improves navigation.

Oh thank the lord, it's about time.

I for one hope you continue to post.

I do too! Stick around in this thread at least

Your city needs you. We need you. Take the weekend off. See you Monday. :)

Keep posting.

I 5th that

Please please, keep posting !

We need @nightstreak to continue. After all, there can never be enough of a night streak's worth of excellent photos.

You're all very kind. Thank you for those words. 🥰 I'll stick around in this thread. I want to see through the end of that pole and the construction of the Bremner Concourse.

Someone shit the bed... or the blocks. It's like they gave this to some staffer with an artsy fartsy hobby. It doesn't fit at all with the clean historical design language for the station.

They should've just given all the blocks that bronze coating. Instead, someone was literally jack hammering this pattern on all the blocks. RIP the butter sticks.

Maybe there should be an Urban Toronto gathering to celebrate once the wooden pole is gone 😂. Which would include an installation of a heritage plaque in its place 😅.

The pole can only be removed when the police remove their equipment (which seems unused). As it's TPS equipment we will have @nightstreak with us for MANY more years.

What is this??? This is dumbfounding me someone must have an explanation for why this was done

Does anyone know how often the Toronto application info centre page is updated? Updated union enhancement project documents were apparently submitted to the city at the end of march, and I assume should be on the page by now. @Northern Light would you happen to know?

On Sunday, there was a guy with a handheld piledriver literally carving the existing blocks by eye. Then they put the blocks in a little makeshift greenhouse and painted the brown. These pictures were taken today after work when I posted it.

I asked one of the hi-vis vest guys watching (supervisor I assumed)...

"Don't want people to get too comfortable" *snort laugh*

Wasn't sure if he was joking or being serious. Fine to sit in jeans, but in suit pants or I imagine a dress or shorts, it's as comfortable as it looks.

I guess it's also easier to disguise dirt and prevent graffiti but watch how quickly those brown parts are covered in white tags and glued on posters.

P.S. Worth pointing out that we spent £1500 (plus shipping) for each of these blocks when we could have just poured concrete into a box to make what they ended up doing to them without shipping them from across the Atlantic.

If something is changed that requires an AIC file and one is submitted, once processed and u/l, the system updates 5 days per week. In general, updates are up within 10 days of the City having a file, often more quickly, but sometimes it can be longer.

No one has an explanation {officially) for how we got the dumb blocks in the first place.

I mean we know the schpiel about Hositle Vehicle Mitigation...... which is nonsense.........

But that has never accounted for a choice that was troublesome both functionally and aesthetically.

The modifications are not an improvement.

This was never hard, if you had to do this (and they didn't) you choose Indiana Limestone (can be capping or even a composite equivalent) so that it matches Union Station.

Failing that, you go with Victorian-style bollards {Jet Black, cast-iron in appearance)

If you can't make either work, there's something wrong w/you, but @#$# it, go with medium grey granite.

But no....we get this crud........... sigh.
