The new GO-TTC co-fare brought in last year doesn't apply to UPX does it? If true, the UPX will never live up to it's full potential.

I was on the UPX twice a couple weeks ago and it was busy with people going to & from the airport.

Something I've noticed recently is that people are parking at the airport, or somewhere near the airport, and then taking the UPX to get downtown to catch a Leafs, Raptors, Blues Jays game.

The parking at Malton station is free, and there are weekend trains now, though at 25% of the frequency. I wonder where UPX passengers are parked, because parking is not cheap at the airport or around it.

I wrote 10 fun facts about the UP Express celebrating its 10th anniversary. To avoid flooding the thread I’ll only share the ones that most relate to the topics of this thread.

Did you know the Union-Pearson Express has been represented by 5 different colours?

Since 2015 the UP Express Line has been included on the GO Transit system map, but the colour used for the line has changed numerous times:

Did you know the Union-Pearson Express has had 3 logos since 2015?

The original logo was designed by Winkreative.

In 2019, Metrolinx fully rebranded the UP Express.

In 2023 the new logo was modified to reflect the new brand colours launched that year:

Did you know there was a proposal to introduce express service on the Union-Pearson Express?

This service would have run every 30 minutes between Toronto Union Station and Pearson Airport, bypassing Bloor and Weston.

This change was quickly cancelled after severe pushback:

Did you know the main entrance to the Union-Pearson Express terminal at Union Station was supposed to be through a park?

Early designs of the UP Express terminal was supposed to be connected to a small park located just west of the Citigroup Building via a pedestrian bridge:

As implied by its name, UP Express exists to be a direct connection for those using the airport.
It could be argued that all others (not using the airport) can and should be using GO or TTC.
I haven't used UPX since it returned to charging the higher fare. For a brief period of time, trips between Union, Bloor, and/or Weston could use GO tap-on and fares. But Google map transit directions frequently suggest using UPX, and I assume many find the $5.30 fare ($2 more than TTC, $1.60 more than GO) between Bloor and Union to not be prohibitively expensive.

The failure in the UP is having prioritised express airport service over standard regional and local transit.

Why does UP run every 15 mins and GO only half hourly?

It should have been reversed from the beginning.

Here we are ten years later, and ML has still not completed the fourth track or provided more convenient service for all those commuters.

If that is the result we want to achieve, it would be logical to achieve that not by using punitive measures, but by encouraging all others using the service to use GO or TTC by making the GO or TTC options more attractive. Remember, the average user doesn't care which transit agency is providing their service, all they care is that they are able to get where they are going in a reasonable time frame. If they are using the UP Express en masse, clearly they are doing something better than the other agencies.

In a city that wants to encourage transit use, I cannot think of a more complete own goal than scaring off clientele by punitive fares!

I wish they would at least paint them in fun colours. The livery is so godamn ugly.

"I painted it, so it must work now" said no transit mechanic ever.

"It's late, but it sure looks pretty, so I'm happy" said no transit customer ever.

Clean and comfortable and reliable is what matters.

I have never seen a dirty interior or exterior on a UP train.... for that, I will give ML a tip of the hat.

Looking pretty and being clean, comfortable and reliable are mutually exclusive? Not what I implied at all.
