Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark for a band was quite the mouthful too, so they shortened it to OMD. And the sky didn't fall either way. /shrug

Whatever happened to calling a park ‘the spit’, ‘Sugar Beach’ etc.? lol
Nothing lmao. Leslie Lookout Park opened in 2024 - named because it's on Leslie St. Love Park opened in 2023 and its pond is heart shaped - so cute. Sugar Beach got its name because it's across from the historic Redpath Sugar Refinery. Ookwemin Minising means "place of the black cherry trees" and was selected because... the area historically had cherry trees! Wow, so crazy that things are named referencing stuff in history or its area, right? Only objectionable when it's not in English or something I guess

Thanks for sharing, Alex!

Glad to see the Keating Channel called out as the heart of the community. Amazing as Biidaasige park is, the potential intimacy and uniqueness of the channel as an urban space seem like the prime opportunity for the development - esp. given the way the island's already been sliced up..

Perhaps it could be written as Ōkwémin Minising if diacritics were to be used. After all, Pokémon, the highest-grossing media franchise in the world, uses a diacritic in its name in English.

Note that Ojibwe phonology has "kw" be a single sound like English "qu."

Better yet, Ookwemin Minising could be rendered in Canadian Aboriginal Syllabics often used by the Ojibwe:

ᐆ ᐧᑫᒥᓐ ᒥᓂᓯᓐᒃ
  • — “Oo”
  • ᐧᑫ — “kwe” (Eastern pre-glyph w-dot)
  • — “mi”
  • — final “n”
  • (space)
  • — “mi”
  • — “ni”
  • — “si”
  • ᓐᒃ — “ng” (/ŋ/)
I am very impressed by the output of the newly released ChatGPT-5 and I have double-checked the writing using online Ojibwe syllabic guides.

Ergo Cherry Street and Cherry Beach! 🤣

One key thing also is to provide affordable retail space so that you don't price everyone out of the area like they have been doing across Toronto, hence why so many streets have for lease signs now. Just like they give affordable housing they should do the same for small business owners wanting to open a cafe etc. A wide variety of retail as well, not just the same old thing. Look at the Well I rarley see people buying anything from those stores.
