Assessment of Therme Ontario Place bid cited Aecon as ‘construction partner,’ but no partnership existed

An Aecon spokesperson said the two companies did discuss a potential collaboration at the time, but nothing was finalized.

The Infrastructure Ontario assessment of Therme’s bid to build a spa at Ontario Place wrongly presented development giant Aecon as a “construction partner,” a document obtained by the Star has revealed, potentially improving the bid’s likelihood of success.
When asked by the Star about its involvement in the project, an Aecon spokesperson said the two companies did discuss a potential collaboration at the time, but nothing was finalized.
“Aecon was aware that we were within the bid. However, the discussions for Aecon’s involvement were ongoing, and we are no longer involved with the project.”

How about they rebrand as "Firma...for those sagging glutes, thighs and abdominals! Come to us for day and we will take care of the midlife pear shape for you!"

I cant wait until Therme goes bust, and Ontario taxpayers are unfortunately left holding the bag on this idiotic pixie dust dream.

The amount of corruption, lies and insanity around this entire project should be reason enough to give Ford an emphatic heave-ho come election time. If not investigation and prosecution, sooner.
The whole thing is absolutely unreal.

Look on the bright side, the site is stripped bare of those pesky trees, it's now perfect for a Ferris Wheel!

What would happen if and when it was realized this thing wouldn't be happening? And how long would it take to get to that point in time?

You give Ontario voters way too much credit. There have been so many reasons to turf Doug the Thug over the years and yet he keeps getting reelected by a landslide with 4% turnout.

If the deal completely falls through, I'm worried what will replace it, especially now that it's completely bare and it's too late to keep what was there.

A water park was in line with the facilities Ontario Place had at the beginning. A public bath/spa (if as affordable as planned) with big windows to allow for lake views would have represented something new for the city. But if they decide to move the Science Centre there now, or build a casino, that would definitely be worse as neither would encourage windows. Even a ferris wheel doesn't seem as bad in comparison. 😥

From what I recall, supposedly construction was to have started in "Spring 2026".

Ford was asked where Therme is getting financing for its project, but said he didn't know.
"It's none of my business, as long as they come here," he said. "But they seem to be moving forward and have financing."
Have they shown up yet, or taken possession of the site? Is there going to be a ground-breaking ceremony soon, like what just happened for the new Science Centre? Do they have a "construction partner" contracted yet?
I'm guessing probably not.
(And if you ran a construction company, I think you'd probably want to ensure you were getting paid up front in any deal with them before starting any work.)

Well, they're behind schedule, but it seems they've recently applied for an infill permit:
File 2026-416695

- erosion protection and infil on southwest corner
- construction start april 2027 until january 2030

- SAND? beach extension and lake infill. I thought that was canned for a full rock beach?
- construction start april 2028 to january 2030
1779807265710.png

- north peninsula and wall construction
- construction starts march 2028 to june 2029

- mentioned above. This is an access road to support construction to be later used as the new MGT. Also support for the east shore.
- construction starts july 2026 to july 2027

- infill access road where the old bridge was. So trucks can cross apperently
- construction starts july 2026 and "completion" is mid-2030 but probably because thats when the infill gets removed

- this one seems like some kind of generic application for shoreline infil
- construction start july 2026 to September 2029.
