Wasn't the Ex looking into adding more restaurants, cafes & retail into their grounds anyway to encourage more walkability & all-season (not just CNE) use? What if we combine some of the ideas presented here and push for retail & restaurants at ground level & rooftop (with parking in between). Since so much parking is needed, maybe the parking could be broken up across more than one building too so one could be built partly into the hill, another be like the Guelph one, and they could either be arranged in blocks to make a new district, or they could be scattered throughout the Ex grounds so no one area feels too heavy. I am sure some of our talented designers & architects could come up with something amazing.
It's funny you say that, I suggested years ago here to turn the ex into residential, got lots of heat for that. Making it retail/shopping/restaurants only will cause way more issues. There's this weird fascination with the ex and this 3 week event that otherwise requires so much ashfault and parking spots that sit empty 95% of the year

I agree with you that it's odd it needs to be a 99.99% empty asphalt surface parking lot for most of the year. Do you happen to know if there is a reason it has to be just asphalt? Could it not be grass or perhaps they could roll in-roll out more planters during non-CNE times? They're not even using it currently for Cirque du Soleil, it's just empty. 😒

Except they don't sit empty 95% of the year. Those lots are used anytime there's an event at Ex Place, and there are many, 1791 a year according to this article), plus concerts at Budweiser Stage.

I'm not saying I like parking lots being there, but saying the space isn't used when the CNE is not on is simply untrue.

fiiinnne. Ill clarify my statement

"Theres this weird fascination with the ex and this 3 week event that otherwise requires so much ashfault and parking spots that sit empty *of anything other than cars* 95% of the year"

Cne midway, the idy race pretty much only count towards this

Since when did people on this forum care so much about parking?

When people say it's sitting unused, they're saying that it is not being used for anything other than parking. We just let people park their cars there for 95% of the year because we haven't allowed it to be turned into anything useful.

Interesting that the government agreed to stop rather than actually fight it in court. It doesn't seem like a very strong case for the activists. It's just a week until the hearing starts, but could be months to get a decision. That said, it seems they didn't agree to stop work pending the decision, just until the day of the hearing.

I finally got around to reading the decision posted above, and found the answer to my question. It pays to read things!

[57] At the case conference before Callaghan J. on June 28, 2024, the parties agreed that rather than schedule an interlocutory injunction, the application itself would be scheduled on a short timetable returnable July 19, 2024. Ontario voluntarily agreed that it would not cause or permit any permanent destruction of any trees, shrubs, or buildings at Ontario Place between the date of the appearance before Callaghan J. and July 19, 2024 at 6:00 p.m. As I reserved my decision at the end of argument on July 19, 2024, Ontario agreed, at my request, that it would voluntarily continue that undertaking until 6:00 p.m. on July 26, 2024, or until I released my decision, whichever came first.

That's on the shortlist for building housing, but could be a good "pop up" location.
I believe the surface Green P lot at 35 Bellevue is going to be built out. However the topic was parking garage rooftops so I suspect the property @JasonParis is talking about is at 20 St. Andrew St.

It's also getting a repaving job so I don't think it's going anywhere.

So I just passed the garage at Bramalea GO and got a shot for reference for the one here. This one is 2,100 spaces so 5,000 would be twice the size. 😫

Great reference for comparison. But I think they need 2700 spots for the OP anchor tenants not 5000.

There are some surface spots at OP that will remain, so if they go with building the parkade within the Ex, they would need something very comparable in size to the Bramalea GO parkade.

Alternatively, they could go with the plan no one wants - to convert the surface parking at OP into a giant parkade which would be somewhat bigger than the Bramalea GO parkade, (but not double).
