^^^ Seems like a really inefficient way to move material up to the street, like emptying a bathtub with a spoon. But I guess that's the way it's done.

I thought so also, but - Looks like they are moving rock chunks rather than soil, maybe that makes a difference. As they get lower I wonder if they will change their method.

Very surprised to hear the pit is only halfway excavated as they were anticipating crane delivery earlier this year, which you would assume means the end of excavation.

what's the typical more efficient approach?
Would it be to load up a big dump crate and lift it out of the pit by crane?

The typical excavation approach is building a ramp for truck access, commonly used in most high rise project with up to 4 underground levels. OL stations is way deeper than that and require more struts, therefore no ramp.

They will do that once it get deeper, for the first few levels it's just cheaper to use the clamshell. And Moss Park site is quite big for those machine to move around easily.
For some stations with more space constraint they couldn't use tower crane and had to build a lift to move the dumpster up and down.

Goes without saying, but this is such a HUGE exciting project. Goes across the whole city. So many things tunnels and bridges and stations. I know we all hate Metrolinx for the colossal screw up of the Eglinton LRT but damn this is fun to watch getting built.
Hoping that theyve learned their lessons from ECT and FLRT. Third times gotta be the charm.

Couldn't agree more! I'll also add the fact that it goes through east/west of downtown (+first subway construction down here in 50 years) and the size and design of Exhibition station brings up the excitement even more. Pinch me!

Is the station designs final for any of these stations? We’re not going to have another East Harbour, are we?

With full architectural plans out for Ex station, I would bet money on it being the final design.

And there's no stopping it now. Transit users are always afraid of conservative governments putting a stop to expensive transit projects like Harris did in the 90s with the Eglinton subway and the Sheppard stumpway but not only did Ford not stop the downtown relief line, he made it much bigger. He just had to get "downtown" out of the name. I'll take it. Our grandchildren will be paying for this but this thing is gonna get built.

Looks like it would be a pretty fun job to dig dig dig using the excavator!
Well, at least no elbow grease required 😄
If one looks closely at excavation for buildings, you will see this type of work take place with a backhoe in place of the the clam shell. Since this is scale rock being remove, this is the best way to do it
