I realise they are building right up to the property line but I do think it wrong they were allowed to remove mature trees that appear to have generally been quite healthy - as seen on this 2023 Streetview. Yes, they will have to plant new trees but ..

Are those 'mature' trees? I'm no arborist, but they look pretty young to me ...

Trust me, those trees are far more healthy than what was there earlier this summer. I really don't know what happening to them.

Maybe with this new development coming, the city just stopped paying them any mind, knowing that they would be replaced.

That's totally just a guess though and we will likely never know for sure. 🤷‍♂️

They were planted prior to the Pan Am Games (2015) - not huge or old but mostly healthy and far larger than the new replacements they will plant, eventually.

It's unfortunate, as they were decently healthy and "mature" for the neighbourhood (though unkempt), but as explained above there weren't many other options for staging this project. All I will say is that Rekai has been very communicative with the neighbourhood associations and I have no doubt that they want this project to succeed. They have committed to replacing the trees.

Yeah, I don't think they would just cut them down and walk away from this without putting something back when all is said and done with this development. I guess they needed the extra elbow room for now, for right or wrong.

I am also very happy Rekai are coming to our neighbourhood but developers cutting down trees should be a last resort and I am not convinced the City worked hard enough with them to save these ones. I just think it is shame to see trees that have developed over several years being removed as replacing them with new ones, while better than not, is really not the same.

For sure they needed more power for this site. They are all hooked up now.
