For a hot second I thought they were just prepping for the Christmas market parking lot
Most of these trees were cut down a few months ago, now they are removing the pavers and levelling the "sidewalk" so they can use it as part of their work space They got the OK from TEYCC in February (posted here at the time) SEE: https://secure.toronto.ca/council/agenda-item.do?item=2025.TE20.27 All will need to be put back afterwards but, of course, the trees they removed were a decade old, the replacements will be tiny twigs! They removed what trees were alone the sidewalk and removed the short bits of concrete around the planters.
Maybe they are replacing them or moving them.

On brand for a city that actively hates anyone not in a car. We can never sacrifice a single traffic lane, but sidewalks, bike lanes, and transit routes are all fair game.Another sidewalk lost for years
It is a fairly small 13 floor rectangular building with, I think, only one level below ground so it should not take long now they have actually started.Do we have projected completion date? Are we talking Goode speed, or Cherry House Speed.
Correct, there is only one basement level, no below grade parking. so it should come out of the ground pretty quick. But the slab edges and floor plate changes are not exactly condo-level simple. They will take some time to execute. It is a fairly small 13 floor rectangular building with, I think, only one level below ground so it should not take long now they have actually started.
I realise they are building right up to the property line but I do think it wrong they were allowed to remove mature trees that appear to have generally been quite healthy - as seen on this 2023 Streetview. Yes, they will have to plant new trees but ..All these planters along the Cherry Street sidewalk were flattened and filled in with cement. I guess this will all be torn up and redone anyway, closer to completion of the building.
