Honestly, this (MTL proposal) is somewhat akin to their original plan along the spine. Something scaled down a little of this nature to fill the lots along 96 st please and thank you.

To think that Edmonton is one of the fastest growing cities in Canada, I think there would be a lot of interest in the Quarters and Blatchford.

Just back from ICSC conference in Whistler.

The Quarters should be there marketing itself, along with Blatchford...

Lolz... The quarters will never be able to successfully market itself, it's the branding equivalent of trying to suck-start a shotgun.

I would genuinely love to have been at the focus group where that name was chosen..

"OK everyone, we all know east downtown has a bad rep. We need a new name for the area that doesn't evoke imagery of clapped out buildings and hobos on the streets begging for change."

"I know! We'll call it the quarters"

Yes it may be a very good time for Blatchford, which is moving ahead although still slowly, to get out and market itself more to an out of town crowd who are probably not quite as concerned about price as some of the locals.

At this point there is really nothing to market about the Quarters and yes, they may want to start first by coming up with a better name for the area that sounds more appealing than someone begging for change. Amongst other things, rebranding is needed.

There was nothing wrong with "Jasper East Village" which is what it was prior to being "The Quarters". It had history and name recognition with Edmontonians that The Quarters will never be able to achieve.

In terms of their being "at ICSC", to be honest that would be a waste of money. Firstly, there is nothing in fact to market at ICSC for either The Quarters or Blatchford. Secondly, deals are never actually done at ICSC. They might be started or moved further along or finished at ICSC but they're not done at ICSC.

For those in the business, it can be a great networking opportunity but to be honest for many of the attendees it's an opportunity to spend some time at a world class resort getting in some good skiing if it's not raining and eating some really good food at the expense of your employer.

If the City actually had something to offer in Jasper East Village or Blatchford - whether that be retail sites for sale or property for lease - listing it with the right brokers would get far greater exposure to the right people than "being there marketing itself".

The City really should have built an awesome skatepark in Kinistinaw Park - it would definitely draw more folks to the Quarters than that park does now, and, as the article mentioned, there are no centrally-located skateparks nearby.

Totally agree. Park is very disappointing, especially for the cost.

If Kinistinaw Park is slated for expansion then include a skatepark and a couple of basketball hoops.

It’s sad to see the Quarters hasn’t advanced much, despite the efforts. The Hyatt never materialized on 96 Street.

Rode my bike through that area yesterday. The paver stones on 96 st are now starting to crack, chip and lift up in many spots. Virtually no new development in the area despite the millions spent on rebuilding that street. What a huge waste of time and resources.

I could do a documentary series that would have enough stories to make at least 100 episodes about blindered planners that have never left their desk and have no concept of the market. Or if they do know there's a market, they'll approach it like Marxists. Hello UBC urban geography department as one such shining example; back in the day, a prof there told me that you'd only get tenure in that department if you bought into and sold a Marxist perspective. I'm not joking about that.

Yet jasper ave looks like trash, as well as 103st, 103ave, the river valley road MUP and park area is overcrowded and badly needing investment.

Such poor management of money 😔
