The Bay is run and owned by a group based in the U.S. -- their sole M.O. is to maximize profits more aligned with the Walmart model "buy cheap and sell high". A proud history is going through the chopping mill.
The problem is people willing to pay more are discerning and can see if the quality or prestige is not quite there and those who want a better price are not going to pay more. So you can't do both.

It’s wild how they’re trying to negotiate with landlords, who they’re already not paying rent to, to try and ask them to pay for the renovation costs to their stores. Any of the top shopping malls in Canada will tell them to pound sand and would have no issues repurposing their space if they went under, it’s the secondary malls across Canada that will have difficulty filling the space.

Well, it will take time and spending money to repurpose the space as well as the disruption and loss of traffic, so the malls may consider what they can do to help but there are limits.

Hudson’s Bay does not draw shoppers to a mall as it did 20 years ago. Obviously Edmonton is in its own league but a mall like Yorkdale in Toronto is not going to spend money renovating a Bay store if they can spend the same amount to repurpose it into another luxury wing to cater to a more affluent shopper.

If Southgate can successfully transform their old Sears space into smaller retailers (H&M, London Drugs, Winners), then surely they can do something similar with their Bay space?

Yes, they probably can, but it took quite a while to fill the old Sears space in Southgate and this is a large space too which will require quite a bit of work also.

As for Yorkdale, perhaps there is more demand there that here, but Nordstrom is not looking for new space in Canada like it was when Sears closed.

Southgate I am not to worried about filling space. Malls like St Albert centre will be tougher. Was in yesterday and the Bay is definitely leaving. shelves were emptier than normal. Also Bootlegger was liquidating. (Don't know if it was just one store or all).

All Bay stores will be closing except for 6 stores in central Canada

Can't imagine there being anything left on the shelves....I was there 10 days ago and it looked like there might have been 10% of their crap still on the shelves....

I was at West Ed Bay yesterday and there is very little at 40% off, most of it is just 15%. Most of the stock that’s left is garbage, and felt like I was walking through a thrift store.

Yes, I noticed that sign said UP TO 40% OFF. Someone I know who went yesterday to another location also said most was around 15% or less and someone else mentioned to me that the selection at West Ed was not great.

I feel many suppliers stopped shipping a while ago to the Bay because of slow or non payment, so there wasn't a lot more than what was in the stores.
