There are examples of poor design causing unnecessary problems, though. The eastbound 401 at Kennedy has the express lanes merging in, with very little room to get over to the Kennedy off-ramp. Traffic entering from Warden has to move over two lanes to the left to merge in and then not be stuck in the Kennedy exit.
Agreed. Adding a lane crossing over Kennedy Rd and also at the Markham Rd overpass, where there is a similar design the 401 (McCowan Rd/Scarborough Centre ramp entry, express to collector transfer, right on top of the Markham Rd exit), could make even rush hour traffic bearable by better aligning the collectors to minimize lane shifting..

I noticed a sign stating that the Canal Road ramps to Highway 400 will be closed permanently on June 10th.

Bidding on the replacement of the Canal Road bridges closes Friday.

Details on the project here:

Interestingly the replacement bridges will not be built for any future highway widening, and are designed for only 6 lanes. They will "future-proof" it by including the bridge footings for the wider bridge, but the deck itself will be a part of the ultimate widening contract.

The bridges will also be roughly twice as long as today, by the looks of it.

Yes, appears so. The Canal Road access is the only at-grade intersection on the 400-series network, as far as I know. Definitely good to remove it.

I’m surprised it stayed open after the Line 5 interchange was completed. It was always a weird remnant, because every other Highway 400 interchange was built in the early 1950s with ramps instead of RIRO intersections. (Grade intersections remained on the QEW right up to the 1970s.)

I believe there are one or two on the 400 closer to Parry Sound (because there is no other road in the area to connect it).

They are limited-use access roads leading to a communication tower and to a waste disposal site, so a bit different than Canal Road, but yes, that’s correct.

Ahh, you are right. One more - Hidden Glen Road. I'm not as familiar with that stretch of the 400.

Odd as that stretch of the 400 is relatively new and MTO grade seperated even snowmobile trails on parts of the 400 up there. I wonder why they left this as an at-grade intersection instead of building a service road.

I was attending events in Woodstock and Strathroy and took the opportunity to observe changes on the Hwy 401 over the past nine months, as I no longer need to visit London regularly anymore.

I can't recall the last time I saw the sunrise in my rearview mirror before 6am. Several speeding drivers passed me, but unlike Friday, there were no backups in the collector lanes. On Friday, the stretch from Hwy 410 to beyond Mavis Rd was a parking lot due to construction on the Hwy 410 ramp and the Hwy 401.

Work on the Grand River area is nearing completion, with paving underway for the eastbound lanes and the 8 ramp. The Grand River area is waiting to open.

During the trip from Woodstock to Strathroy, I was passed by dozens of cars doing 150 km/h or more, even though I was going with the flow of traffic at 130 km/h.

A new bridge is being constructed for the London Veterans Memorial Pkwy interchange, reducing traffic to two lanes. This is the second-to-last bridge to be widened to accommodate 10 lanes of traffic for London area. Just before the Wellington interchange, eastbound traffic is reduced to two lanes, and the westbound lanes are being used due to reconstruction of the existing lanes. It's unclear if the RR overpass bridge will be widened as well.

Traffic was chaotic on the return trip before Hwy 6 to Hwy 25. I can't wait for the 10-lane area to be completed. It was stop-and-go without any apparent cause.

Hwy 401 was a parking lot for the Eastbound Express lanes west of Hurontario St

Getting onto the Hwy 403 was a mess, with gridlock coming off 410 due to two accidents within about 1000m of each other, involving four fire trucks blocking traffic. One incident occurred where 401 westbound traffic connects to the 403, and the other was at the Eglinton Ramp area.

Good thing this is not a regular thing.

Tree clearing has started on the plots of land in red at Hanlon/Woodlawn (Hwy 7 ) in Guelph for what I can only imagine is site prep for the new Highway 7.

Articulated Haulers were being delivered to the large site today, suggesting earthworks are up next pretty soon.

My best guess is they are going to shift the current intersection westwards to accommodate construction hence the smaller site on the SW corner?

I would also like to report that tree clearing has also been happening along portions of the HWY 3 corridor in St. Thomas and Elgin County, I drove by this weekend and there was pretty significant clearing near the future Wonderland Road interchange and along some portions of the corridor that has been reserved for the twinning.
