Not mandatory, but if a plate gets lost or destroyed, would the owner have to take one of these new plates?

Eventually yes, because they'll only make the new plates. Unless they screw it up like Ontario did with a plate that doesn't work at night and had to essentially scrap it and revert to the old plates.
Putting aside the motto, the plate just looks bad. The Slogan is in an Arial font, literally the most boring and default font. And why can't we have picture plates with red letters? Especially when some of the backgrounds are BLUE! And so it doesn't look like BC or Ontario. And the picture... it's like they went on Google images and took the first one they saw. Something with an illustration or a bit more creativity would've been much better.

Looks like all the paving is pretty much done for the 4th lane N/S on Deerfoot but they still have a big section blocked off. Anyone know when they plan to open it up?

I would think the new left lane will open once all the work on the right side of the project is completed.
