"Over the past decade and a half, Ossington has done an about-face. Less than 20 years ago, it was where you’d go to get a three-dollar beer at a dimly lit sports bar while waiting for an oil change at the auto body shop next door. Now, it’s home to an award-winning brewery, trendy natural wine bars and Michelin-starred restaurants. You’d never guess that Bonito’s—a cozy wood-panelled room above its sister spot, Bar Bowie—used to be a laundromat."

Art's opinion: might give this a try; however, it's on Ossington thus my bank account might hurt a bit!

This sounds amazing:

A riff on the classic Korean dish yukhoe nakji (raw beef and live octopus), Bonito’s’ Tang Tang E is made with finely ground raw beef and cooked Korean octopus, which are more tender than their Galician counterparts. The mixture is tossed with sesame oil, perilla seeds, pickled daikon and chili oil before being topped with sesame seeds and egg yolk. Served with sheets of nori for scooping. (Shots of soju on the side are highly recommended.) $22

I will go just to try that.

Somehow, miraculously, I've never been there...

If you've ever been the Green Room (OG and current iteration), Java House on Queen West, or Pour Boy in Koreatown, then it's a similar vibe of a bar. I vaguely remember hearing that they all share the same ownership. It has the divey, dim lit setting with cheapish beer and pitchers of Sangria. And they serve mediocre Asian (Viet-Thai) food mixed in with the more typical pub grub. They mostly appeal to post secondary students especially larger groups.

I could have sworn that place was open when I moved to Toronto in 2001. I'm surprised it was 2007. I've been there and the Green Room many times, but not in the last decade.

Been to all of those, yes, especially Java since it was the un-official goth hangout many years ago (and still is to a lesser degree).

The original Green Room with the back alley entrance off Bloor is still one of my favourite bars through the years. Such a shame that they closed back in 2017. The new location on College is just a generic iteration of it, and IMO a lamer version of the Red Room and the former Nirvana bar that was also nearby at College & Bathurst.

Almost impossible to replicate that back alley grittiness.

This event look so much fun...damn i missed it!

"With mini-pancake cereal, hot dog towers and ramen lasagna filling up TikTok feeds, it’s sometimes hard to take food seriously. But initiatives like Chefs for Change, a sold-out event that took place on April 1 at Evergreen Brick Works, help remind us how important access to healthy food is. In support of the Toronto Foundation for Student Success, 21 of the city’s top chefs came together under one roof to reimagine their favourite childhood dishes. The evening, which was emceed by the city’s cheese king, Afrim Pristine, saw Olivia Chow and Doug Ford get their hands dirty during a competitive pasta cook-off, an auction for prizes including dinner at Nobu with Toronto’s chief of police, a fire-breathing saxophonist, and $1 million in funds raised for a very good cause."

Mom's Recipes is opening on Avenue Road, just south of Davenport

I feel bad for all the roaches that had to move out of there when it closed 😉

But it was in its heyday one of those places which defined a neighbourhood as "urban"; and where absolutely no one was there simply to take pictures on their phones to let others know that they were there. They simply enjoyed it for what it was.
