Since we are talking about transit lanes, is this (the rush hour only streetcar priority lane) still on the books? Is it ever enforced? Or is this a remnant of the past?

If so, this is poorly marked, there are barely (if any) sings on King, and there are no diamonds drawn within the streetcar lane. Is the double dashed white lane marking even defined by HTA?

As per discussions with @Paclo this thread will remain as a general thread for news in relation to this program.

While threads for individual routes will also be created, if they do not already exist.

I have amended the thread title to reflect the above.

There are lots more of those coming (Dufferin is already out); do we want one for each route?

I didn't see a Dufferin thread. But the city is doing a survey! Transit lovers, go do your thing.

Just for a heads up, the car-brains are already organizing to try to block the RapidTO project on Dufferin. This is why it's critical to complete the survey by May 26 to show your support, as well as register for tomorrow's town hall (if you are available) per the link @evandyk posted. Having used to ride the Dufferin bus often, I can vouch for why people call it the Sufferin'.

"We support better transit, but..."

The story of North American cities in a nutshell.
To be fair I am not surprised people are upset about losing "their" (on street) parking. It's selfish, but understandable. There are houses that face Dufferin with no driveway or laneway parking behind them.

Which is why, we ought to have:

a) Raised the price of street parking steadily to fair market value, something in the range of $125 per month outside the core, and $200 per month in the core, so as to steadily erode demand.

b) Approved a massive expansion of Floating Car Share licences and slashed the cost of those permits or the ones for reserved on-street spaces to the same as regular street permit parking so as to make carsharing a vastly more attractive choice.

c) Tied the proposed changes here, and those I noted above to a higher guaranteed level of TTC service on the street in question. Assume you not only want, but need to and will, attract 20% more riders, and so boost peak service by 20%, but off peak service by 30% to make it highly attractive.

I'm 100% in favour of eliminating the on-street parking here; but you do want to pair that with beneficial alternatives for people.

The need to hike permit parking fees is long overdue! The current system is a joke when nearby off-street lots cost at least five (or even ten) times the current permit parking rate!

When new condo buildings are built, have the possibility of including parking for the neighbourhood (at a fee, of course). If the mixed-use buildings are along arterial roads, include Green P garage for store customers and visitors to the area (again, at a fee). Eliminate on-street parking in the process.

Of course, you'll also have the special person who will stop in the NO STOPPING zone just to go inside a store for their espresso. Even if the lineup is out the door.

At a glance it looks like there are a pretty limited number of properties without one of either laneway access or a driveway.

Eglinton to St Clair: ~0
St Clair to Dupont: ~30
Dupont to Bloor: ~70
Bloor to College: <10
College to Queen: ~30
Queen to Dufferin Gate: <10

So it’s unfortunate for maybe 150 households being reduced from 1+ down to zero parking spaces, the city should at least consult each of these cases to help find alternative solutions. I feel less sympathy for any multi-car households, this is hardly the place for that anymore.

Are they losing overnight parking?

From the signage, it's not permit parking now. So they can't legally park there overnight!

You're right actually, I am struggling to find any stretch with legal overnight permit parking on Dufferin. There are some where there is no parking restrictions outside of rush hour, but that's still subject to 3 hour maximum rule.

Edit: it's just permit parking between Queen and Dundas it seems

looks like there are 41 people with parking permits affected by this and the city will be talking with them directly

it's also unclear if these people also have a laneway garage or not, as many of the houses in that stretch with permit parking in front of them actually have a laneway garage

So, in summary, it looks like the number of people that have legal permit parking which is their only parking spot living along Dufferin is maybe a few dozen total.

There is probably many more who would park overnight, but that was technically never legally allowed as it would be over 3 hours.

Maybe Dufferin Mall can rent out underground parking spaces to neighbourhood cars that need parking. Useful during snow storms in winter. They can be "reserved" spaces that are the furthest from the entrance doors. The spaces not filled during the Christmas rush.
