They're lucky it was Goldberg they added to the group. He's never seen a bombing campaign he wasn't in favour of, so he wasn't going to say anything until it was done.

Could put this lots of different places:

Article in the Globe looking at the substantial opportunity to attract top tier researchers from the U.S. to Canadian Universities.

Lots more in the article,

I like Prof. Gommerman's idea but I think we can do more. U of T alone raised a substantial multiple of 15M last quarter.

I'd like to see more research dollars from the Feds (new commitment) , acceleration of existing plans (ie. Canada Research chair funding due to start in 2026 should be available from Sept '25).

Also for STEM 'gets'..... I'd like to see a triple your endowment offer. ie. a donor to U of T or McGill putting up 100M would get a match for that from the respective province and the Feds.

This is generational opportunity to poach talent.

Agreed.

Canada's research budget was decimated in the Harper years, and has never really recovered as far as I can see. (It's far easier to destroy funding than create anew). My perspective: I was a research trainee (including 18 months of post-doctoral work) in life sciences until 2009. Funding looked terrible when I left.

I'd love to see Canada improve research funding, so that we can get/recruit some people fleeing the impending US funding desert. Some may be Canadians that opt to return.

Huh.....

So Florida.....which still has lots of undocumented residents, but apparently fewer than it used to has employers crying about the lack of labour......

So the government of Florida has a solution! Child Labour...!

I kid you not.

A bill, backed by Florida's Governor seeks to allow youth as young as 14 to work overnight shifts on school nights......

****

One can come down in any number of places on the how to handle 'illegal' immigrants question, just as one can with legal immigration and temporary workers etc.

There should almost certainly be nuance, compassion and pragmatism on any/all of the above...........

But whatever one's slant.........surely child labour, particularly in a form likely to lower graduation rates is not at all a reasonable solution to a labour shortage. Holy .....

I saw this earlier on IG. It's a shockingly terrible idea! (Although I'm sure those little hands and fingers can better clean all the nooks and crannies 🙄)

It seems for this administration and its fellow travellers, particularly those state bordering the Gulf of America Mexico, education is just a hotbed of crazy ideas like science, human rights and anything to do with the rest of the world. Best leave that to the parents and/or the church.

You are absolutely correct about that. Former VP Dick Cheney used Goldberg to promote the Iraq war.
Goldberg's article titled The Great Terror, published in The New Yorker in 2002, played a significant role in shaping the narrative around the Iraq War. In this piece, Goldberg explored Saddam Hussein's genocidal actions against the Kurds and suggested possible ties between Saddam's regime and Al-Qaeda. This article was widely cited by policymakers and media outlets as part of the justification for the invasion of Iraq. Of course, there has never been any evidence that Saddam had ties to Al-Qaeda or was involved in 9/11 in fact Hussein and Al-Qaeda were mortal enemies. Goldberg had been instrumental in manufacturing consent for wars beginning with George W. Bush and extending to Obama's wars.

Most other journalists would not have sat on this information. I listened to Max Blumenthal being interviewed by Judge Napolitano today discussing this security breach and Max said he would have released the chat logs right away. A very interesting discussion (look up "Judging Freedom" with Judge Napolitano on You Tube)

I don't know the law on this, but sitting quietly on the chat group to gather more information, or releasing chat logs publicly could expose Goldberg to legal risk. I'll try to find that podcast this evening.

I write this as I sit in my US hotel about to head to a tradeshow.

A lot of people in my area are canceling work travel to the US. Even if you're not detained, the risk that you are held for questioning and they could try to access information on your phone/laptop is a significant concern.
