What! No Shawinigan Handshake?

Masked men tried to steal vehicle from Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s home, he says

Ford says his Ontario Provincial Police detail thwarted the attempt at around 12:30 a.m.

Toronto police said their officers arrested and charged four people, including two youth, with possessing an electronic device for motor vehicle theft and unlawfully purchasing an automobile master key.

Is anything about the East Harbour hub newsworthy? Seems like rehash.

A lot of disruption, angst and ink is going to be expended until the parties and/or the courts put some meat on the bones of the federal United Nations Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act, which adopts the principles of the UN declaration, including:

Article 32

  • 1. Indigenous peoples have the right to determine and develop priorities and strategies for the development or use of their lands or territories and other resources.
  • 2. States shall consult and cooperate in good faith with the indigenous peoples concerned through their own representative institutions in order to obtain their free and informed consent prior to the approval of any project affecting their lands or territories and other resources, particularly in connection with the development, utilization or exploitation of mineral, water or other resources.
  • 3. States shall provide effective mechanisms for just and fair redress for any such activities, and appropriate measures shall be taken to mitigate adverse environmental, economic, social, cultural or spiritual impact.

Some claim it is not a veto. Sure looks like one to me.

^i think it's pretty disgusting that our premier is taking a colonial attitude here as opposed to addressing the issues raised here, to put int mildly. Particular in the light of well documented abuses such attitudes has had on indigenous peoples in the past...

...if Doug claims he's distancing himself from Trump, this certainly isn't the way to do it.

I interpret Ford's remarks as more broadly anti-democratic rather than anything specific against indigenous people. It is just part of a much larger pattern of power-hungry and anti-democratic initiatives and statements Ford has made over the years, including his public attacks on judges, his attempt to dismantle the Greenbelt and roll back other environmental protections, the weakening of environmental assessments, the limiting of consultations and community inputs on new projects all over the province, and taking control of bike lanes away from the City of Toronto.
