I would say that's quicker depending on how long it takes for the 97 to arrive at the Airport. It's faster than changing at South Keys and Bayview, IMO.
Is the bus stop for 97 close to where the Line 4 stop is? Is there a place one could wait and take whichever comes first?

No. The 97 stop, last I took it, was on the ground level outside of baggage carousels, on the far-right of the pillars if exiting arrivals. The LRT stop is on the opposite end of arrivals, on the second level near departures. You'd think they would move the bus stop to underneath the LRT station but perhaps that's a plan for the future.

N.B after April 27th, the 97 ceases to exist, and your options become Line 4 or a half-hour local bus, the 197, which only goes to South Keys, and would be much slower than Line 4.

Transmania posted a Toronto->Parliament via Line 4 video today:

Okay in which case would it ever be faster to take Line 4 to South Keys and transfer to one of the transitway buses going to Hurdman and then Line 1 compared to Line 2 and then Line 1? Again if going to Parliament Hill.

So, I commute regularly from South Keys to Parliament, and the difference between the two is generally a wash, maybe 4 minutes faster by bus, I generally choose the train because it's more comfortable.

It's a bit of a trek from the platform to Stop A, so once you choose one way or the other you are pretty committed. The transfer between Line 4 and Line 2 is timed to 6 minutes, so your wait time is always consistent. If you trek to Stop A, you could be there anywhere from a couple minutes to 15 minutes, so I wouldn't recommend it.

And they're getting rid of the 97? Talk about one step forward, two steps back.

It's the only way to justify the rail link. The city didn't really want to do it in the first place, but the Airport and the feds really wanted it and kicked in money to build the line itself. However, they didn't kick in the funds to double track north of South Keys, which is the only way a far better branching service could have worked. Instead we get a shuttle train.

There's various ways they could fix this in the future, so it's not hopeless.

Also note in the video, he just missed the train at the airport. It took him 58 minutes to reach parliament, of which 23 minutes was wait time. The fastest possible time to make the trip would have been 42 minutes, assuming he had the best possible connections at Airport and Bayview, since no matter what you have to wait six minutes at South Keys. In the far off future, if the line had enough double tracking to allow Line 4 to interline all the way to Bayview, then the fastest possible time would be 36 minutes.

Hmm, okay with the limited knowledge I have of the situation it seem like a bad idea to remove the 97. Is it going to save OC Transpo money not to run it? Or is it purely political?

Especially if as you said it's a bit of a trek to transfer to the transitway at South Keys.

It's essentially forcing a transfer for everyone travelling from the airport no matter where they are going, correct? So people on the transitway would have to transfer to Line 4 which is up to 12 minutes wait plus transfer time at South Keys? I guess if this a problem or not depends on how frequently the 97 ran before.

Is the transfer going TO the airport from Line 2 instant? like does the line 4 train pull up for the platform as soon as the Line 2 train leaves?

The 97 is actually every 15 minutes in most time periods. The fastest possible travel time is 15 minutes to Hurdman, and then its another 10 minutes plus transfer time at Hurdman. So the theoretical best possible time is 25 minutes, but depending on the day and connections it can exceed an hour. The real.world average is about 42ish minutes

As for Line 2, the transfer is 6-7 minutes that way as well. Line 2 and 4 are sharing a platform, and basically the Line 4 trains arrive at the mid point of line 2 headway. Then both north and southbound Line 2 trains arrive around the same time (northbound is like a 2 minutes sooner)

As a fun bonus fact, South Keys has 340 trains per day passing through, if you count each scheduled trip. Between the two lines there's a train every 6 minutes for 17 hours a day. That's a lot for a single island platform on a mostly single track line

Since technically Line 2 and Line 4 are mainline railroads, it makes South Keys the second busiest train station by train movements in the country, behind Union Station but ahead of Gare Centrale.

That makes no sense. If Line 2 trains and Line 4 trains are only running every 12 minutes, that means a train would come or go every 3 minutes. 20 movements an hour.

A typical subway station here has more movements an hour on Line 1 and Line 2. Ditto in Montreal.

Somewhere down in the 100s, surely. You can't pretend that it's a "mainline railway" during the times in the day it's not allowed to operate as a "mainline railway" when their 40-metre long "train" is running. That's not much longer than a 30-metre streetcar!

Right, but the subway/metro networks are not technically "mainline railroads".

Do you have a link for these stats? I am curious what the number is for Gare Centrale.
