Yeah WEM is old and aging, and you can see it but it's coasting on it's position as the largest mall and its reputation. I'd argue if something like City Centre bites the bullet, renovates all of it into a new glassy showpiece centre rather than a Soviet era bunker, then that could compete in the future.
In defense of both WEM and City Centre, I have to say both have maintained the interiors over the year, but it is the common Edmonton approach nice inside, don't pay much attention to the exterior.

WEM is a suburban mall, so I kind of get that but I do hope City Centre is opened up more to the street to give it a more distinct urban feel. The corners with TD and where Shoppers is has been improved, but more should be done.
 
It's amazing when you think Edmonton's population has increased 250,000 people (more than 2 Red Deers) and business is decreasing? along the city's trendiest mainstreet?

I guess all the new shoppers are going to places like SEC, and malls and other power centres.
Yeah, pretty much but it it is frustrating for those who want to live near a supposedly walkable area and not have to drive 20 minutes to a place like SEC which I rarely do.

With more residential being built near Whyte Ave, I am hopeful some retailers will begin to realize there is a market here being missed or under served and that will start to change.
 
It's a product of a lot of things, but a real shame how much retail has left Whyte. Sure we love going down for a stroll still, hit the market, have brunch, go to a couple remaining clothing stores, but it's a shadow.
I agree. When visiting town years ago, I'd always shop along the core Whyte Avenue strip, but now it feels like there's no reason to go there, unless you want to drink a lot..

Also, the building next to darling was just renovated. Not sure what’s going in there.
 
Not to be a Debbie downer, but fundraising $9 million just seems completely out to lunch in terms of what’s possible. The building itself could be bought almost four times over! And to have the gall to turn down valid offers from other buyers…It’s so silly. After the Winspear and Roxy debacles, our arts community needs a dose of realism.

I agree, the concept has merit, but the numbers seem unrealistic
