Well, Travis Bickle, that's kind of a gross. You're pretty disgusting, aren't you?

There are documentaries you can watch and articles you can read that will help you develop empathy. It's never too late to start developing compassion for others. You can even talk to your local homeless and get a sense of some of their stories. You'd be shocked to learn that they're actually people and not fungi.
You go feed them and get them to stop harassing me.

Calgary wasn't like that a decade ago, Edmonton had a bigger issue with homelessness. It's sad to see how downhill Canada went in a decade.

Well they should not be allowed to foam free assault people when they have their moments or endlessly begging and stealing from stores when they can't feed themselves. They are currently a fungi infecting society. There isn't enough shelters for the growing demands while taxpayers are growing with increasing taxes. So it's probably best to restrict some of their freedom and to create some employment camps for them.

For those who support the status quo or have too much sympathy for them. They should donate for their well being and be partially held accountable for their crimes ranging from assaults committed to random victims, littering of dangerous needles, missing fire extinguishers stolen by these folks, harassment when purchasing food and thief when they are hungry. The extra cleaning work needed for their short stay on the streetcars already means fares are spent in the worse way possible.

There are beggars I seen for over half a decade. I really question their purpose of life and will they just continue their pointless existence for years to come. Always relying on helping individuals to fill their stomach daily. I just don't see an happy ending for them in the current system.
This is wiiiiild take that borders on inhumane

Their are three solutions to homelessness that I've seen consistently actually work

1. Housing provided by the state.
2. Social support as needed
3. Stable employment

perhaps a heavy handed approach to getting all three issues set up is needed. Regardless, I can promise you this, canada will not solve its problems by listening to commenter's like you.

Anyway, not trying to derail this thread but felt your comment has to be called out for the nonsense that it is

This reminds me of some rhetoric some unpleasant German folk said about 80 years ago.

I always find it fascinating to see what "wastes of taxpayer money" people balk at. It's always stuff that delivers a social good - homeless shelters, healthcare, transit, libraries; stuff that benefits little people. No one ever puts their foot down at bailing out mismanaged corporations that should've gone under in the free market they love so much, or paying for their expansion plans, or facilitating in-person "meetings" of international "leaders" on the taxpayer dime that could've been done over Zoom. The less useful something is for society, the more OK it is to waste taxpayer money on it. Give me a fucking break.

Well those types of comments arent rare nowadays. The problem is a societal one. The idea of "personal responsibility" is so ingrained in our society that any idea to the contrary is seen as radical.
"just quit your drug addiction" "just find a job" "get off the streets". All of those are issues only society can fix, By saying we just need to punish them for problems that most of the time arent their faut, we are minimizing societies failures in how it happened.

free housing, drug treatment centers, government-provided jobs, all can help homeless get back on thier feet

No,

In my 20's, I hung out with a guy (friend of my friends), who last I was told, is now homeless on the streets of Hamilton. Biggest prick I ever knew. Had no problem "burning bridges" and taking advantage of people's generosity. He figured he make a living doing YouTube videos rather than work an actual job. Got hooked on drugs.

Most homeless people are so racked up in debt to their dealers that even if they attempted to turn their lives around and started making money, their dealer would come after them, and the vicious cycle repeats.

"free housing"
Where's my free housing???? Why should people who choose to make poor choices in life be rewarded with free housing? There's people out there working two jobs and still living in their cars.

Really? I think it's quite the opposite. The idea of NO responsibility is the norm these days. Everyone is a VICTIM of something else. Rare that people take responsibility for their actions. And that's always the attitude around homelessness... not their fault.

“Homeless people don’t deserve free housing. Why don’t homeless people have free housing?”

This is what you just said lol

Because housing is not a discretionary luxury item, but a necessity to long term survival and stability?

We're not talking about distributing free Aston Martins here.

When they just sit down quietly in their own corner, I can bat a blind eye.

When they start randomly shouting got f* yourself and f* the world behind your back scaring the hell out of you and threatening to kill you with a pocket knife when they see you walking with a camera, they should be sent to an instruction till they heal. I don't know how some of you support this crap.

Freeloading for life. I got a problem with that. My suggestion is to get them to do some general labour in exchange for food, shelter, support and education to get them back on their feet. By allowing them to roam free and be as lazy as possible isn't solving their problem either. Why work when people just hand it to them.

Once you a while, you got a bum carrying a ton of "treasure" with their cart asking for the ramp on streetcars/buses and slowly loading it onto the vehicle blocking everyone's way and wasting everyone's time. NO they don't want your help, they just need to struggle with it slowly. Of course they didn't pay a fare but that's least of the problem in these situation. I really don't think this is what public transit is for.

Let me summarize your comment:

"some guy i knew i didnt like therefore all homeless are scammers...also eff you I got mine.

Oh im sorry i didnt use the full political talking point. hows this? Do you agree with me now?

"free housing for all"
"free medicare for all"
"free dental care for all"
"living wage for all"

Hahah. Alright then.... free houses for everyone! Free food for everyone! Free clothes for everyone! The state will provide all.
You can make fun of my point all you want, but in doing so all you are saying is that it is perfectly acceptable for a person to be unhoused, unfed, unclothed, if they can't afford to pay for those things themselves. This is the society you want? Let people who can't provide for themselves die? How gallant of you.
