I wonder if the ambitious plans for Niagara Falls are making this airport more important as it is the closest large facility? I’m guessing 40 mins door to door.
Niagara Falls NY airport is much closer if the border isn’t a problem.

The "cohesive vision" for Niagara Falls hinted at by the government last year apparently includes plans for an international airport, so it is possible that an expanded YHM could fulfill that role with enhanced transportation connections.

New multi-million-dollar expansion planned for Hamilton’s airport: source

CHCH News has learned that a new multi-million-dollar expansion of John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport is expected to be announced Tuesday, which will include a new passenger airline serving the city.

An official announcement is scheduled to happen at 11 a.m. at the airport.

Airlines such as Flair, Play and Swoop and others have started — and stopped — flying in and out of Hamilton’s airport over the past number of years, but a source with direct knowledge of the deal who is not authorized to speak publicly says this investment is far different and larger than past airline launches in the city.

A handful of daily flights from Play, Sunwing and WestJet are currently the only passenger flights available.

Apparently Porter is officially setting up shop, including a terminal expansion.

It's funny, I saw this on SSP but nothing in that article actually confirms it's Porter.

Looks like we’re getting the YHU/YTZ treatment with Porter.

They won’t leave YYZ, but they might make us a mini hub. I’m wondering if they might set up a mini maintenance base here as well as I’d imagine the storage fees at YYZ are astronomical.

If I’m being honest, I imagine we’ll only get a YOW or YUL route to start to help feed connections. With what the rumours are saying, I’d then imagine us getting YVR, YEG, and YHZ, and then the rest will fill in.

I wonder if Porter is considering YHM-YXX, as that was immensely popular under swoop. Time will tell.

Exciting times for the airport. I’m wondering if they will give Porter exclusivity on routes if it ends up being a heavy investment.

It's definitely Porter, they have two flights coming in tomorrow morning from YYZ.

I do wonder if that is why PLAY is leaving - they will be closing the passenger terminal to rebuild for Porter. Very interested to see details tomorrow - definitely looks like a repeat of what Porter is doing at YHU in Montreal.

My expectation is that they will keep the terminal operational. Westjet as far as we know will continue to operate to and from Calgary. Play is just restructuring and focusing more on Europe. Too bad they couldn't have worked with Porter to develop some connections.

Isn't Porter spreading itself too thin with 3 hubs in GTA?
Maybe long term they leave YYZ. It can't be too great fighting with Air Canada, the U.S. legacy carriers and to some extent Westjet from YYZ.

Having said that I also appreciate they have several partnerships with other YYZ carriers.

I'm also to see if their planned partnership at Air Transat might see some more Air Transat flights back at YHM.

I guess they could be hoping to eventually make YHM the real second airport for Toronto, unlike the failed Pickering attempt. If they had been able to expand the runways at Billy Bishop they never would have set up shop at YYZ, so they are only there because they have to and probably would love an exit. That would be playing the long game though. They already plan to shift to St Hubert once it builds it's new terminal and abandon YUL
