What a POS. I bike along Danforth almost every day (including today & yesterday). Hope he gets hit by a car or something, he deserves it.

I already try my best to be vigilant of my surroundings, including cars and pedestrians. Aside from the usual worry of jaywalkers cutting you off, if I see someone walking with a cup of coffee in their hand, I already know that's something to watch out for (couple years ago my brother told me he had a drink thrown in his face when he was biking on Dufferin, incidentally around the same time (within a few days or so) as I was biking on Vic Park late in the evening and a passing car threw a water bottle, not directly at me or under my wheels, but onto the road in front of me, and when I gave it the finger as it drove off, proceeded to throw a Tim Horton's paper sleeve further ahead), but damn, now I'll also be on the lookout for POSes with a damn shopping cart!

Video shows man pushing shopping cart into Danforth bike lane, causing cyclist to crash

Toronto police are investigating after a man pushed a shopping cart into a Danforth Avenue bike lane, striking an e-bike rider and causing them to crash Tuesday morning.
Video of the attack, which was at Danforth Avenue near Monarch Park Avenue, was posted to social media by Dave Shellnut, a local biking advocate and lawyer.

The video shows a bald man with sunglasses, wearing a white shirt and black coat, walking down the street with an empty cart before he forcefully pushed it at the cyclist.

The cart threw the cyclist to the ground, knocking off his helmet and a few items off his bike.
The man briefly looks back before he continues walking and the video cuts off.

Shellnut said on X that the victim was injured and “another e-cyclist stopped to help him.”

Officers told the Star they cannot verify the video, but did say they’re investigating an assault call in the Danforth and Monarch Park Avenues area from Tuesday morning.

Police say they’ve taken a report from the victim and are investigating the reported assault though they cannot release any more information.

I don't find myself out there often, but from the video, it did look like it was the type of guy who is often found loitering in the neighbourhood.

TBH, if I was biking and there was a guy with a shopping cart out of place like that, my spidey sense would be going off. But I'm not sure that was avoidable even if the cyclist was prepared, given how fast he launched the cart.

Toronto police have made an arrest after a video circulating online showed a man pushing a shopping cart into a Danforth Avenue bike lane, striking an e-bike rider and knocking them over Tuesday morning.

Officers told the Star they cannot verify the video, but did announce Thursday morning that they arrested a man after an assault in the Danforth and Monarch Park Avenues area.

Police said the victim was transported to hospital with non-life-threating injuries after they were hit with a cart and fell off their e-bike.

I'm glad they arrested the guy. At 47 years old, you'd think they would have matured enough to know right from wrong, and know how stupid decisions like this lead to life altering possibilities not just for someone, but for themselves too.

Its my understanding the community knows who this person (the assailant) is, and will expect police action.
If no police action were taken, I wouldn't mind if the community took matters into their own hands (within reason).

I mean, if the cyclist slowed down and proceeded slowly while watching the shopping cart, I'm pretty sure it would've been avoidable or at least minimized the harm done.

Good. Hope they throw him under the bus (pun intended).

TBH, if I was biking and there was a guy with a shopping cart out of place like that, my spidey sense would be going off.
Yesterday my spidey sense went off at Castle Frank when I saw some dude with a paper cup in one hand throw a piece of cardboard like a frisbee with the other hand, not towards the bike lane but away from it, off to the side. I slowed down in advance and paid attention to what he'd do next, he didn't pay attention to me but crossed the bike lane and proceeded to wander onto the road weaving through stopped traffic (at a red light). I looked back a few times but couldn't see him anymore, then another fellow cyclist as well as a scooter pulled up behind me, which was nice for a change.

So it happened to me about 40 mins ago: turned onto Bloor from Church and merged behind a group of cyclists going east, when I passed the Tim Horton's suddenly what appeared to be a plastic mug flew right in front of my face, narrowly missing me in the bike lane and landing on the road (car lane). Definitely a targeted attack against a random cyclist (me), and no way that was avoidable as it came out of absolutely nowhere (could've come from inside the building through the open door for all I know). Even though it didn't hit me, it could've also hit a passing car instead.

To whoever it was, if you ever happen to see this post, I hope you get hit by a bus and get both arms broken, or crash your car (if you drive) into a brick wall you worthless piece of subhuman garbage. You are not worth the dirt underneath my shoes.

Not sure which forum this would be relevant for, but here's a petition I launched on Friday calling for the City to bring back open streets programs such as ActiveTO and OpenStreetsTO by 2026. Please spread the word.

Nicely done. To be honest, I'm not sure why the Mayor is getting a free ride on active transportation and public realm given that the city largely operates as it did under John Tory from both those perspectives.

I'm not sure one can faithfully argue that a continued John Tory mayoralty would have looked substantively different than does Olivia Chow's actual current mayoralty, and that's a damn shame. Reviving the open streets component of ActiveTO should be the absolute lowest bar to cross (so good on that poster for taking action), and the Mayor hasn't even done that.
