Really nice to get some positive news for a change
Toronto police are investigating after a man pushed a shopping cart into a Danforth Avenue bike lane, striking an e-bike rider and causing them to crash Tuesday morning.
Video of the attack, which was at Danforth Avenue near Monarch Park Avenue, was posted to social media by Dave Shellnut, a local biking advocate and lawyer.
The video shows a bald man with sunglasses, wearing a white shirt and black coat, walking down the street with an empty cart before he forcefully pushed it at the cyclist.
The cart threw the cyclist to the ground, knocking off his helmet and a few items off his bike.
The man briefly looks back before he continues walking and the video cuts off.
Shellnut said on X that the victim was injured and “another e-cyclist stopped to help him.”
Officers told the Star they cannot verify the video, but did say they’re investigating an assault call in the Danforth and Monarch Park Avenues area from Tuesday morning.
Police say they’ve taken a report from the victim and are investigating the reported assault though they cannot release any more information.

Toronto police have made an arrest after a video circulating online showed a man pushing a shopping cart into a Danforth Avenue bike lane, striking an e-bike rider and knocking them over Tuesday morning.
Officers told the Star they cannot verify the video, but did announce Thursday morning that they arrested a man after an assault in the Danforth and Monarch Park Avenues area.
Police said the victim was transported to hospital with non-life-threating injuries after they were hit with a cart and fell off their e-bike.

If no police action were taken, I wouldn't mind if the community took matters into their own hands (within reason). Its my understanding the community knows who this person (the assailant) is, and will expect police action.
I mean, if the cyclist slowed down and proceeded slowly while watching the shopping cart, I'm pretty sure it would've been avoidable or at least minimized the harm done.TBH, if I was biking and there was a guy with a shopping cart out of place like that, my spidey sense would be going off. But I'm not sure that was avoidable even if the cyclist was prepared, given how fast he launched the cart.
Good. Hope they throw him under the bus (pun intended).Police make arrest after video shows man pushing shopping cart into Danforth bike lane, knocking cyclist over

Yesterday my spidey sense went off at Castle Frank when I saw some dude with a paper cup in one hand throw a piece of cardboard like a frisbee with the other hand, not towards the bike lane but away from it, off to the side. I slowed down in advance and paid attention to what he'd do next, he didn't pay attention to me but crossed the bike lane and proceeded to wander onto the road weaving through stopped traffic (at a red light). I looked back a few times but couldn't see him anymore, then another fellow cyclist as well as a scooter pulled up behind me, which was nice for a change.TBH, if I was biking and there was a guy with a shopping cart out of place like that, my spidey sense would be going off.
Nicely done. To be honest, I'm not sure why the Mayor is getting a free ride on active transportation and public realm given that the city largely operates as it did under John Tory from both those perspectives. Not sure which forum this would be relevant for, but here's a petition I launched on Friday calling for the City to bring back open streets programs such as ActiveTO and OpenStreetsTO by 2026. Please spread the word.
