GO Woodbine station makes a lot of sense but don't hold your breath

50 second mark - ford explicitly mentions finch and woodbine go station. Imo it'll be officially announced before the next provincial elections. Especially if finch tsp can salvage the speed.

Ford and private money is a love afair as old as time.

What do you mean, you don't like running across three 400 series highways to get to your warehouse job? 😅
I wouldn't give it up for the world!

I should clarify that I meant building the line alone probably won’t effectively serve the Pearson employment area too well, since much of it extends well beyond the 700-metre walkable radius from the station.

I took the entire Line 6 from Humber College and Finch West and had a few pleasent (and one very unpleasent) surprises:

- Boarded the train at around 7:15 PM, and it took only 36 min 15 seconds to Finch West!
- We only stopped at 4 or 5 lights throughout the entire journey, each around 30 seconds to a minute. Interestingly, we stopped at Duncanwood for 30 seconds , even though it should have TSP enabled.
- We did slow down at some of the other lights but didn't come to a full stop. We sailed through the Highway 400 intersection.
- We were passing the intersections at 35km/h, otherwise the straight sections we were going at 40-50km/h, occasionally 55.

Now to the cons:
- The ride quality was brutal, even worse than what I remembered when I first rode it back in December. The vibration and noise were already quite bad at the straight sections, and it sounded way worse at the curves between Matin Grove and Kipling with the squeeks. We were doing ~20km/h there and I have no faith the vehicle could go any faster than that. Seems like there were flat spots on the wheels as well.
- There were 3 vehicles bunched up together after mine.

I can concur with what many people already said here that this line can easily attain the promised 34 minute run time with TPS fully enabled, or even less with consistent speed limits. It is unfortunate that these terrible vehicles are the one thing that we have to stick with.

For the record, it took 55 min when I first rode it on 14 December, and then 44 minutes on 17 January.

I want to see the intersection limits removed. And the train should be able to move at 60 kph thru the midblock section. 40 to 50 km/h is too slow. I’m hoping these restricts will be lifted as we exit the trial period.

Thanks for the report.

It's hard to tell if this problem is the fault of the route, or the particular train you were on.

I think it might be both.

When I took the line last week, I looked down at the rails - there is a surface texture at any location where a train stops that is best described as "pockmarked", and which I have never seen before.

Resilient wheelsets can create unusual effects on the railhead due to their flexibility, but I can't account for the surface finish that I saw - and especially not after a couple of months of service.

It would be game changing. And really makes me think we should prioritize an extension to the Airport.

30 mins runtime from Finch West to Humber College means 40 to 45 mins runtime to Pearson Airport. So someone could get from VMC to the Airport in just about an hour. Absolutely game changing.
Not to rain on your parade, but people have been getting from Pearson to VMC in 15 minutes for decades - by car.

I think it's important to not get too deep into the bubble and realize that such a trip occurring in "just" an hour literally sounds like a joke to your average Joe. This will attract precisely 0% choice riders, particularly for anyone commuting to work in the airport zone who will either have to take a long walk down industrial drags or transfer to infrequent buses should they take the LRT.

Yeah, except getting to Pearson by car costs my $40, and getting there by TTC costs $3.25.

Why would driving to Pearson cost $40?

A lot of people circumvent Uber/ Taxi charges by having a family or friend drop them off at the airport.

This is what transit has to compete with.

Because not everyone has friends or family available to drop them off or pick them up from the airport.

The UPX already demonstrates that there are many people who will take public transit to the Airport, despite the car nominally being faster. I don’t think we need to rehash this debate.

Well obviously. My point is, a large amount of people do, and for those people the idea of taking transit to the airport will never cross their minds.

A 40-45 minute runtime from Line 1 to the Airport is woefully slow and is in no way competitive with driving to the airport.

This is why I'm dead set against the city continuously adding more stops to the UPX train. There needs to be an express service by transit to the airport. Should we just run an express GO bus from Union to Pearson?

But I digress. It's another classic example of the Toronto transit mentality. Connectivity > Speed

You can regularly drive from Union to Pearson in 30 minutes lmao? I'd like to see that, and the ensuing stunt driving ticket.

You're comparing apples to oranges, the UPX is always either faster than driving, or at least takes the same amount of time during very low traffic hours.

Line 6 is at least twice as slow, and in the example of VMC to Pearson, over four times as slow. People will take the fastest mode of transportation to their destination, and do not operate on a binary of "taking transit" v.s "not taking transit" as you seem to be assuming.

Lastly, no an uber to Pearson does not cost $40 from anywhere along Line 6, 99% of the time, stop with the dramatics. Not sure why you are taking my comment so personally.
