Wasn't around for Lougheed's time in power (not born) but everyone I talk to about him very rarely has a bad thing to say about him and his government. And after reading about him, I can see why. He did a lot of good for Alberta.
Lougheed and in some respects Getty had a clear vision for the province. Lougheed and Getty had their fights with Ottawa but things seemed to move forward. Then it started to fade. The Klein Cuts did quite a number on the infrastructure legacy that Lougheed created. The PC were in decline but when the more right of centre conservatives entered the fray things just started rolling downhill faster.

I was involved with the PCs early on but After Klein I walked away. Even happened on the federal side. I caught the tale end of Trudeau mania, but switched when Joe Clark was leading. Even Mulrunny had some good people from Alberta in his cabinet. But after I walked away from all party politics until this last year both provincially and federally. It seams like the old Social Credit took over.

^^ Yes, I was in solid support of Peter Loughheed back in them-thar-days along with my friends at the time (now deceased) Erik Lefsrud (the Bear, Lawyer and Alberta Supreme Court Judge) Elmer Kraft (one-time General Manager of the Derrick Golf and Winter Club) and Rod McLennan (leader of McLennan-Ross law firm on 104th Avenue). Erik and Elmer owned race horses and I used to spend a lot of time with them at their Esquire Stables drinking "milkshakes" and talking politics. Erik had strong connections with Loughheed and company. Those were the days.
^ Yeah, I miss those times.

^ Well, you asked... first the setting -- back in the days when men were men (or so they thought and without much supporting proof) we three, sometimes four, would gather at the Esquire Stables tack room (which under watchful eyes from my seniors was fashioned into the man-est of man-caves) to smoke cigars (cigarettes in my case) and drink experimental concoctions. Now Elmer Kraft the GM of the Derrick Club at the time was known there to prompt the bartender of that facility's Sports Lounge to make progressively bolder cocktails and call them Kraft (Elmer's last name, and yes he was related) Milkshakes. So with nouveau mixology recipes in hand Elmer would just love to try them out on Erik and myself at our stables-tack-room misadventures. As the late afternoon would age toward evening and then into full-bloom night-time the effects of the Kraft-shakes would turn from enabling reasonable discussions and debates into slobbering, comical shout-fests. One could hear the horses laughing in the adjacent box stalls. Were the drinks strong? If I tried one of those today I would first put the local coroner on alert.

Don’t understand all of this nauseating adulation for Lougheed coming from an Edmontonian. He robbed us blind moving everything out of here that wasn’t nailed down. As for Getty he was a complete joke couldn’t even win his own riding in the election. Enough already

April 28 sounds incredibly short. I'd expect an election to be in late May, but I am not clear on the minimum amount of time required for the campaigns
37-51 days, so doable if he goes this Monday. I think the polling and momentum would tell him go now and be quick, so that timeline wouldn’t surprise me at all.

Yes, late April seems too short although I doubt it will be a long campaign. I would expect early May or a bit after that.

Cohos Evamy had a good contact with them as well.

While we can debate about how fair they were to us versus elsewhere, I recall a number of major projects here when Lougheed was Premier such as completely rebuilding the U of A Hospital, a major undertaking.

And on that note, when was the last new hospital built in Edmonton? Oh, that was when Getty was Premier.
