Stephen Teeple, the architect, was interviewed in this article. According to him, the Minler "is “clearly the best” of recently completed libraries across Canada, including the Central Library in Calgary" and he implies that Edmontonians don't like it because they aren't "used to how dynamic it is."

I don't want to be rude, because the interior seems genuinely nice, but these comments reek of some willful ignorance.

I hate to break it to Mr. Teeple, but when the exterior design turns into a meme that many across the country have taken the piss out of, he might want to reconsider that it's only Edmontonians who don't "get it".

he is - like anyone else - entitled to his opinion but so are the rest of us. unfortunately, i'm afraid he didn't just say that, he probably really means it. as for my opinion, that firm does some butt ugly design work and our library is a shining example of it.

it will be interesting to see whether a photo of the actual building ever replaces the shimmering facade in the one single angle out of 360 degrees and the only height depicted in the rendering that could potentially have any interest...

i'm just hoping to be able to say the interiors are a success because from the inside you'll be in the only place where you won't have to look at the outside other than coming and going.

Checked out the library yesterday evening for the first time. Inside was very airy and bright, though I suspect the black paint used in spots will begin to look dirty unless they keep up the cleaning.

Teeple's own marketing staff know the outside of the building is a dog. The portfolio on their website has the interior of the Milner and the exterior of their other buildings. Edit: Within their budget they did a good job delivering what should be an ultra low maintenance exterior.

The inside looks really nice! I'm glad it turned out well.

That last picture of the old library...really just salt in the wound. 😢

You echoed my thoughts completely. I do find it kind of humorous in its own way though — you'll be able to look at the evolution of the downtown branches and seeing them get objectively worse and worse from an architectural standpoint: from the great Carnegie Library which really fits the idea of a "temple of knowledge:" to the Brutalist Centennial Library, which while divisive and admittedly worn out, was a good, if oppressive, example of the style: to the new Milner and whatever it's supposed to be...

“The Stanley Milner Library: Don’t judge a book by its cover.”
i think we may have to agree to disagree on this one...

the exterior of a building is not a paper jacket cover over a book that can be readily and easily changed or hidden at will. the exterior of a building is an integral part of the whole. steve jobs said it much better than i could when talking about good design principles that are as applicable to buildings as they are to computers and ipods and phones and animated movies:

"The third and equally important principle, awkwardly named, was impute. It emphasized that people form an opinion about a company or product based on the signals that it conveys. “People DO judge a book by its cover,” he wrote. “We may have the best product, the highest quality, the most useful software, etc; if we present them in a slipshod manner, they will be perceived as slipshod; it we present them in a creative, professional manner, we will impute the desired qualities.” "

there is something immensely satisfying when this concept is well executed that will be forever lacking with our new library regardless of how successful some of the interior components may prove to be and we will all be poorer as a result despite the architect's rationalizations.
