According to the dude writing the article it is. Btw, these newly minted “deferred contracts” like the guy in Carolina just did or Ohtani in Dodger land……small batch up front and then the bulk at the end……

Trading Bouchard would be a major, major mistake. He's a top defenseman in the league and still young, and his value is lower than it should be right now as a result of a slow start to the season. He's impossible to replace and you're not going to get the value back that he's worth.

If you want to clear cap to add a player like Rantanen, it has to be several medium salary players leaving. Kane, Henrique, etc.

I don't think it's worth it though, that salary could be better spent elsewhere in my opinion.

The MLB uses a totally different system to the NHL and technically doesn't even have a salary cap.

I don't fully understand all the inner workings of how both league's contract structures work, however I think I can pretty confidently say that NHL team's can't get near the same savings as an MLB team.

We have seen deferrals allow teams to have savings on their AAV, like the Seth Jarvis contract (I assume who you mean by the Carolina guy), who gets a large bonus after his contract ends that allows the Canes to save about half a million on the cap every year. Good savings for sure, but not something that's going to make a player like Rantanen easily affordable to the Oilers. Stacking salary in the later part of a contract basically just helps the team afford it in the short term and doesn't really change the cap hit much, which is really what matters in the NHL.

Let's say hypothetically the Oilers were to sign Rantanen for 14 mil, which is what he's rumoured to be asking for. Using the same structure as the Jarvis contract, they could save just over a million dollars a year on the cap. Again, good savings, but not going to make a Rantanen signing easier to make.
 
is it me or do the Oilers seem to get spooked by being a featured game on HNIC? I dont have Sportsnet so I only get to watch them lose on rare Saturday nights.

Maybe he's been distracted by his wife's endeavors at the Canada Permanent Building. I would be a bit more worried about Stu, who just became a father for the second time. In any case, the Oilers are still tied with Vegas for 3rd overall. Unlike some of you, I don't believe the sky is falling.

No, it's not. This narrative is silly, lazy, and I am certainly hoping it is not what the management staff is seeing. We are 5th best in chances against according to NST, and are 2nd best in the league according to CSA. These numbers are real, not the eye-test, and show this is an elite defensive team. Get them a goalie that can save more than the bare minimum and watch them fly.
