Ugh... today was the first time having an AC booking Rouged. YEG to YVR. Specifically looked for and booked a mainline flight. Just about ready to expect AC to drop all mainline at YEG at this point. :(
Being Rouged isn't a bad thing right now though. The only difference you'll notice is a small Rouge sticker by the door, if anything at all. The MAX cabins as of current are still majority in the old, mainline AC configuration.

I'm like the other 99.9% of Edmontonians who don't know or care about this forum's ongoing airport rivalry. I take whatever route works best and my family, and most of the time it involves going through Calgary, the same as it would be for people in Ottawa going through Montreal. For me it's about getting the best option. I'm not going to be a martyr for a hopeless cause.
You sure read a lot into that and are being rather hyperbolic.

If I am taking an indirect flight I’d simply do it at any other location than Calgary.

If im gonna have a 6 hour lay over it will be far more enjoyable, and will have better transit access to leave the airport in places like van, toronto Seattle or chicago.

We could add Iceland to that list.

I simply never fly through Calgary. Its not about Martyrdom.

I'm fairly sure that most people who have lived in Edmonton for any length of time over the last few decades do know something about our air service issues related to the city to our south. It is not just a niche interest here.

I don't expect that others who live elsewhere understand or appreciate these concerns, so it is up to us to decide how and where to travel. I agree there are many other interesting places to visit and get connecting flights than Calgary. I have used three of those mentioned and it has been more enjoyable for me too. It didn't take a great effort, although I had to be intentional about it, which is perhaps why some people just default to the closest option.

To each their own. Everyone has to live their lives. I also choose to never go through YYC. It’s just simply not an option for me and my family. You do have to get creative sometimes and it definitely takes a bit of work but to me it’s worth feeling like I’m not feeding the problem. For Europe it’s preferably Amsterdam direct or Toronto or Montreal. If it’s Asia it would be Vancouver. When the US is an option (it’s not right now), I could make our existing options work. I’ve been to a few great spots using United’s Denver flight. I’m trying to stay away from Westjet lately so I for sure have no reason to ever go to Calgary for a flight.

I do think people who fly through Calgary from Edmonton and especially those who drive should have to sign a waiver to never ever be able to complain about terrible flight options from YEG and can never complain about any and all YYC related travel issues. Like if your flight get’s delayed or they lost your luggage, Nobody wants to hear that shhh

My approach as well.

Calgary YYC / Tourism Calgary promotes / advertises their airport & city in Alberta Canada 🇨🇦 better, compared to Edmonton YEG. It’s another reason why they have more flights ✈️/ frequencies on various Airlines year round . . Yes of course WestJet too ✅

This won’t effect Calgary YYC, Vancouver YVR or Toronto YYZ too much as they have more daily year round flights ✈️ into Saskatchewan🇨🇦 currently.

Edmonton YEG -Saskatoon YXE / Regina YQR is 2x daily to both cities- up to 4 daily only in S26 - but Edmonton does have more daily frequencies via the bus 🚌 to Regina/ Saskatoon on both Rider Express & FlixBus 7days a week compared to other cities in Canada.

As Edmonton is the main connecting point for passenger bus service into Saskatchewan & Manitoba year round since 2018 (after Greyhound end its service) ✅.

It’s crazy how many YYC haters are on this forum. So much hatred. How do you guys cope with this day and night? Anytime I am on this page I feel I accidentally clicked on YYC page as YYC is mentioned more here than YEG. How sad!!

Just as YYC will never ever be in the same league like a LHR, YEG will NEVER be in the same league as YYC no matter what we do with our flying habits and avoiding YYC! If you can save money by flying through YYC then do it! Why throw your hard earned money away? It does not make a difference!!

Funny how simply stating that you don't connect through Calgary gets you labelled a sad martyr, when in actuality I think very little about it.

Bottom line, I'm not spending my money to get subpar service and waste a bunch of time down highway 2. In a competitive market, there are better choices.

Literally this, I just choose not to since part of the journey is exploring airports and I'm not doing it to a city down highway 2.

The usual forum members here didn't bring up YYC as much until Vanfan tbh

💯 % well said! I live in Edmonton & have no hatred on Any City or Their Airports✅.

Airports I passed through YEG, Vancouver YVR , Toronto YYZ , Calgary YYC & Ottawa YOW in this country.
Several Asia 1️⃣’s Beijing PEK, Shanghai Pudong PVG, Shanghai Hongqiao SHA , Guangzhou CAN & Hangzhou HGH in China, Hong Kong HKG 🇭🇰 & 3 in the US🇺🇸 Seattle SEA , Las Vegas LAS & San Francisco SFO.

1st time I flew from Calgary YYC was in Spring of 2017 when it had Hainan Airlines service on Boeing 787 between YYC 🇨🇦& Beijing PEK , China 🇨🇳 until it ended service in (October 2019) .

It was good 👍 excellent experience to connect through YYC with WestJet & Hainan Airlines ✅!!

In Flight ✈️ map after take off from Calgary YYC - PEK on Hainan Airlines 787 & the Arrival view of the Apron area at PEK of all of us passengers getting off the plane.

I’m indifferent to it. I always fly from YEG (the last thing I want to do after a long day of travel is drive 3 hours home or stay in a hotel), but if the flight times/airfare/connecting time through YYC are better than the other options I book it.

The airlines can see how many people are flying from YEG to wherever, so even if we’re connecting WS in Calgary, if the numbers warrant it, at some point somebody else (Porter, AC, Flair, United) might pick up the route and fly direct.

Maybe United, but I highly doubt Westjet and Air Canada would do that as it is much easier to count on YEG traffic to fill seats from their hubs.

He's exaggerating, but not by much. In my experience the vast majority of Edmontonians don't seem to know or care about YEG's situation. Everyone I know takes the flight that works for them best, and for travel outside of Canada, it usually ends up being through Calgary.

Dude, that's the textbook example of being a martyr.
