North Tower redevelopment begins: https://flyyeg.com/corporate/media/...rowth-with-north-tower-redevelopment-project/

"The 63,000-square-foot North Tower redevelopment will be delivered by Clark Builders. The project includes safety upgrades, improvements to the building envelope, modernization of elevators, refreshed interior spaces and new infrastructure to support future tenant fit-outs. Located in a highly visible area of the terminal, the redevelopment represents an important step in preparing YEG for future passenger and business growth."

Figure 4 is a bit troubling to me. EIA projection even in 2048 seems to assume that our international service will always be the usual Mexico runs (continues to be a very small %) of overall count.

While the region will be made up of almost 1/3 foreign born, EIA does not look like it will be doing much to attract long haul overseas flights. Very disappointing indeed.
I wouldn’t put too much stock in those graphs. The one showing the proportion of cargo compared to passenger remains stagnant when they are building a huge cargo hub to boost freight

Pic looks a little different from the original? No?

Yes, it seems mostly a very conservative projection of current trends. With the plans for expansion it is quite likely actual results will turn out better.

I don’t think it’s that they aren’t trying, it’s that they know the reality of the situation. YEG is not a hub, and isn’t going to become one anytime soon. As a result Westjet will continue to funnel traffic to YYc and ac to yvr or yyz. Yeg will pick up some point to point traffic but that’s not gonna drive a massive increase.

The realities of the industry are what they are, and I don’t mind the airport authority being conservative in their estimates and agressive in trying to beat that,

Chances are if we assume things will be the same in 20 years or more, that assumption will end up being wrong. I have seen this happen a number of times with other things.

However, also perhaps at this point there is not enough to assume differently yet either.

It’s the last part I think that’s the most important one.

Building a huge cargo hub will probably mean taking a load off of Anchorage. They are third in the world for cargo tonnage.
Edit. Didn't realize Anchorage is that far from us. Then maybe not.

Probably much of that from Anchorage goes to other parts of the US, but perhaps we could pick up some of what goes to Canada from there and even a bit more.

I'd like to see that. I'm getting into commercial aviation and plane spotting. Cargo planes are a fun watch. The more the better.

Yep good 👍 example of it. This Spring / Summer 2026 (WS) WestJet Calgary YYC - Toronto YYZ has up to 9️⃣-1️⃣1️⃣ daily flights✈️ & while cutting back on Edmonton YEG -YYZ with a “mix bag” of 3️⃣-5️⃣flights (depending on the day of week).
Clearly WS focusing on its YYC Hub in Canada 🇨🇦✅☑️!!

Meanwhile (AC) Air Canada YEG - YYZ up to 7️⃣daily flights throughout the week for the most part- (with few minor cuts on weekends). WestJet is ceding this route to AC.

Apparently YEG-ATL on WS has been completely removed. I'm wondering if YEG-SLC will also be removed, given how poorly it's been performing and how WS seems to be focussing on scrapping low-yielding routes (like YEG-SLC) and instead funnelling people through YYC these days.

Edmonton YEG - Minneapolis MSP is reduce to 3x weekly in Winter as well.
Currently it’s daily for S26.

WS is so inconsistent with their YEG service....Just like they cancelled YUL and now they want you to fly through YYC.

Why would flights to DL's main hubs not work from YEG. MSP used to be three or 4 dailies on NW and then DL. Yes, transborder traffic is down, but not to that extent.
