My understanding is that the pool was built to be exactly 50m, which became a problem with computerized timing systems for competition that require room for the touch pad. It probably was prohibitively expensive to add a very small amount of room just for competitions, so it was left. I suspect that if the centre is being turned into a triathalon competition venue, they've probably fixed it now.

Meets are a potential source of revenue for the city. Hopefully the city did a cost/benefit analysis on modifying the pool to the standards required for competitive meets.

Alex Stieda posted photos on Instagram over the weekend. And I suspect more shots this week as we have MADE showcasing the velodrome this week. Place looks incredible. and the banking is outrageous. Juventus will be hosting learn to track ride in when it opens. I plan on getting a bit of track time.

I remember in 1987 they drained Coronation pool for renos and filled it with (Fish) We went fishing in a pool. Hard to believe I know. But I was there lol.

Still Coronation was always my favorite pool. Will miss the warmer colours but know the white is better for safety.

Just knowing what I found during the Fountain Park Pool renos. Coronation (Hemingway) being older I expected a few more issues.

‘Best facility in US or Canada’: Coronation velodrome opens to cycling clubs

Cyclists have been gearing up for an indoor velodrome in Edmonton as construction has been underway in Coronation Park for the last three years.

First review from a friend that road the track, says it fast, lighting is great. Track is making noise as it settles in. And best it's Smooth and fast. The banks are 40 degrees. Friend has ridden Milton and Bromont and says this blows Milton away.

Anyone wanting to check it out has to do a 6 hour qualifying course to get a license to use the track.

OK I got my first Laps in at the Velodrome. Wow what a facility. This with the Hemingway is going to be quite the fitness centre. The Track is just one portion. The amount of floor space Basketball Courts and fitness areas is quite large. In fact the rendering do not do justice. Temps ad humidity are quite high because of all the wood. but is quite pleasant when your are ripping laps at 40kph. The corners are quite intimidating when you first walk the track 42 degrees on the turns. But that seems to fade away as you start doing laps. Some interesting facts. The track boards are not nailed down but are nailed to each other to allow the track to float. The wood is 2 X 2 Norwegian spruce, hand nailed into its neighbor. there is something like 60kms of wood in the track and about 200,000 nails. The track is UCI regulation 250meters. The track is already attracting elite riders from other cities, I guess because of the cost of living in TO and Van. I get my second shot at the track next weekend.

Yes this is going to be a iconic building. And when it opens in Jan you have to see it in person. As I pointed out, Cycling is only one part of this. Adding it to the Hemingway pool was also smart. Another Iconic building in Edmonton.
