It doesn't really seem that bad to me, apart from a couple of temporary situtations over the last 2 or 3 years, and I assume it must get regularly cleaned.
The TTC (and GO) washrooms need to be cleaned every 8 hours. After a shift change, at least.

ML does now put people on the platforms. They even have radios that are connected to the station PA system, and they can make announcements. They are nice people to interact with… but especially for central city stations, the cheery face of ML needs to be accompanied by security focussed people who monitor loitering, inappropriate use of washrooms, and even the basic cleanliness and state of good repair of station buildings washrooms etc.
Bloor is clearly the sketchiest station on the GO network, the decor is drab to depressing - Needles, urine stench, etc. Uunderground passages are not being maintained. Absolutely not the direction ML needs to be heading.

The tunnel at Weston also leaves a lot to be desired...

TTC Washrooms are cleaned (quick check, wipe down, restock, floor mop (light) every 90 minutes during open hours, once overnight before morning service as well.

'Deep Clean' is weekly.

I can't easily track a standard for GO Stations..... though I found a document suggesting cleaning schedules vary by station.

My recollection is that this was fixed back when David Miller was mayor in the 2000s. Perhaps that's the last time Walter used a TTC bathroom?

The stations I use don't have public washrooms.
The following stations have washrooms available:

Line 1

  • Bloor-Yonge
  • Eglinton
  • Finch
  • Sheppard-Yonge
  • Sheppard West
  • Vaughan Metropolitan Centre
  • Wilson

Line 2

  • Bloor-Yonge
  • Kennedy
  • Kipling

Line 4

  • Don Mills
  • Sheppard-Yonge
This leads to more people heading to those stations with public washrooms.

Off topic, but since we're talking about it - how often are the subway & streetcar interiors cleaned (even lightly)?

Subways:

- Basic sweep, dust, and spot clean (spills) - daily

- Major clean (ceilings, poles, operator cabs etc.) - every 73 days.

- Exterior wash - weekly

Streetcars:

Spot clean for spills, and sweep - daily

Floor Wash - biweekly

Windows (interior), walls, poles - every 70 days

Comprehensive clean (ceilings, operators cabs etc.) - yearly.

Exterior wash - weekly.

* most of these should be right, but the exact standards have shifted quite a few times in recent years. So there may be some variation.

Thank you! Seems a bit low, but also kind of shocking that the TTC stays as clean as it does with such little effort! 😮

It's more than daily, surely. I see at times the cleaners jump on and do a quick clean of a streetcar at the terminal. But I assumed this happened to each car more than once a day. I'd have thought they'd have done something in the yard too.

Subways get swept and mopped at the ends of the line during the afternoons while they're still in service. But yes, they get a more fulsome interior clean back at the carhouse at the end of the day.

I seem to recall that the deep interior cleans happened more frequently - such as once a month - but I can't find any evidence of that at this time.

And even the exterior wash may be scheduled for that but it's also dependent on the availability of the rolling stock in its cycle. For instance, the trains on the Sheppard Line will spend weeks at a time up there, and can go for a month or more between exterior washings.

They have started doing this at certain subway stations such as Broadview, but I think that it is still limited to only a couple of stations and routes.

It happens at Dundas West, too. Not sure how often or when, but I've seen it happen at off-peak hours.
