This should definitely become a campaign issue in the upcoming municipal election. Plus, the next council should establish a simple and clear set of rules pertaining to demolition on properties, especially in the central area of the city. At least if the BMO build was still there, it would have been far better than that post war looking piece of property we have now.

Part of the reason we could benefit from Salvador winning re-election. She's one of the only councillors with a strong understanding of urban planning policy.

Kind of sad when Councillor Stevenson was an urban planner with the city before winning her election. She has been a bit of a disappointment.

Perception is half the battle, this site is a blight and something needs to be done to improve the site immediately, but it also begs the question about improving the demand side of the equation given that most developers would rather not sit on such prominent sites.

The key word here is most. Again, given the various projects happening elsewhere downtown, I don't think the biggest or only problem is demand.

Unfortunately, she is not the councilor for this area, but she does seem to understand this better than her colleagues.

Demand for hotel, office and retail IS a real issue.

Calgary's built what, 7 new major Downtown/area hotels in the last few years.... couple thousand rooms, forces older properties to update/upgrade, raises the bar.

How many major new hotels has Edmonton hotels had in the last few (ie. 3 to 5) downtown? I am guessing none.

IMO, this could be a very good location for a new hotel/residential building, perhaps with a bit of commercial/retail space on first few floors (I realize retail is and office space is more challenging).
