It's good that downtown is getting some variety in terms of price points for grocery stores. Up till now, most of the small urban formats have been more mid-market or higher.

I forgot if this has already been mentioned previously but PJ's No Frills will taking the retail space at 899 College Street (The Carvalo), and opening on March 20th

LOL!! Pusateri's trying to open in decidedly blue-collar Little Portugal was always an utter fool's errand. No Frills makes perfect sense however. How a firm can so bafflingly misjudge neighbourhood demographics is a mystery to me. Some out of touch pencil pushing genius somewhere needs to be fired.

Interesting. Relatively close to the Metro @ College & Shaw.
If I lived in the area, I might still prefer the No Frills @ Dufferin mall, since they have to compete head on with a Walmart literally right next door.
Then again, if the flyer specials are good for use at both stores, maybe it won't matter.
They still have to compete with the Metro, but I don't see them going as low as some Walmart deals have been lately...
(or if they PM the Walmart & Metro flyer specials...all the better!!)

I think the new No Frills on College will be fine. It'll serve the more immediate residents within Dufferin Grove and people to the east in Little Italy and Little Portugal. Market segments for people who shop at NF and Metro also don't always overlap. As a person who primarily shops at NF, Nations Experience at Stockyards, Walmart, Costco (lol), T&T, Asian grocery stores in the boonies, and to a lesser degree Food Basics and Freshco, I would probably only set foot inside a Metro less than a handful times a year. And mostly because of specific items on sale. Same can be said of how seldom I'd shop at Sobeys, Loblaws, Farm Boy etc.

Not downtown, but the new Marche Leo's has finally opened on Dundas east of Royal York. That puts it in competition with 2 Loblawses, a Bruno's, a Summerhill Market, a Walfart and a Freshco all within a 5 minute drive...

Facebook is telling me the St. Lawrence Metro was shut down today due to a rodent infestation.

This was on-site today at the location. Walked by around 1pm and again at 4pm. The store was still closed this evening.

Metro was closed all of yesterday. Anyone who has walked through the path entrance towards King will be able to tell you that Oak Hall Lane is filled with rats. This isn't at all surprising.

It takes a few days to remediate closures from public health, no? I was always under the impression that it takes 1-3 days for cleaning and walkthrough confirmations. Anyway, i'm sure the No Frills further down Front was thrilled as it was still busy late into closing last night.

Not sure when it reopened, but it was open yesterday (March 15).

Walked by the upcoming BestCo location on Peter today. Perhaps there is some progress? There is a bunch of shelving or perhaps fridges along the windows (on the second floor). It looks pretty ugly from outside. Perhaps they will put some dark film on the windows to hide that. Or maybe these are not the permanent location for these.

The lighting/ceilings have looked done for awhile from the street.

The fridges have been there for months.

Not sure what's up.

& what about the Bestco that was supposed to open @ Bathurst & Bloor?

The last time I looked in the space the progress had not been significant. They appeared very far from opening.

I asked staff in the next door LCBO.....and was told they're all looking forward to it opening for convenience but had no sense when that might be, except, not soon.
