Bay LRT post-work had 3 folks blocking the stairs on 104st coming up south of Jasper, one guy smoking something by the looks of it.

Called Transit Watch, unsure if anyone came after ~25 minutes as I had to go.

We often see this during major events, but i'd love to see pairs or even quads of this on a more regular basis and still do not get why 8-10 ride in a group versus being able to split up and cover FAR more ground.

i've asked the Beats about this. It's a bit of show of force, when you have thousands of people Downtown and trying to manage behviours.

It seems more symbolic than a show of force. What about the rest of the time, when there are not thousands downtown?

For most of the downtown core most of the time, I feel EPS has abandoned any pretense of downtown community policing.

^Not saying I agree with it, just what they told me. I agree focus should be on community policing.

Yeah, to me that'd be like if EPS grouped patrol cars in convoys of four or five. If two officers are patrolling a street or park in normal circumstances and they only deal with the odd problem, what value do the other 4-8 officers add beyond moral support and looking pretty? It just looks silly to see that many patrolling together when they're not on a specific operation or responding to a call. Imagine the ground they could cover if they patrolled downtown in groups of two instead.

I watched the game at a bar downtown on Sunday, then decided to waltz by the Moss Pit afterwards. My gallows humor was engaged after seeing some pushing and shoving on 103 Ave (by the Loblaws) between some highly intoxicated folks, and then turning the corner and seeing eight cops passively sitting on their bikes near the Bob & Doug statues, blissfully unaware.

Not trying to harsh the vibe, though -- spirits were high and, a few assholes notwithstanding, downtown felt pretty safe to me.

I saw them the other day. Reminded me of when little kids are taken for a walk from playschool, all in a row, so they don't get lost.

On a more positive note - could this be early season training exercises before the training wheels come off and they ride into the city in more reasonable twos?
