The whole point of the gondola as a ride is that it gives an overhead view of the midway, which has for decades since the 70s been focused around the west side of the park. With the midway potentially expanding eastward where the Saddledome currently sits, and with the stampede looking to freshen things up in the park, it might be a good opportunity to remove it.

This is ideal as some brand's 5 star collection of independent hotels. A medium rise Ritz-Carlton by the Stampede grounds would be disappointing.

And alpha house across the street. With all the investment in the area, new bike lanes, station upgrades, hotel, BMO expansion, and potential mixed use on the empty lot between 14th and 15th facing McLeod - not to mention hundreds of new daycare spaces between the old hostel and Sasso, as well as the old HP regional office conversion to private pre-k… makes me wonder if the alpha house will soon be on its way out of the neighbourhood.

I thought you meant the near five star hotels in the city when you said " true five star". The JW Marriott in Edmonton looks the part. It's tall and glassy. It's not a true 5 star property.

Very much doubt they are going anywhere any time soon...

I meant in addition to this. We need a proper 50+ story similar to the JW in Edmonton.
The hotel only goes up to 22nd floor. Most highrise hotels are like that, pretty sure Residence Inn in the Beltline is the same.

We do need a true 5 star at some point. Thinking JW, Hyatt Regency, dare I say Ritz?
We do have a Regency already, that's basically equivalent to a standard Marriott. This location and it being smaller, more boutique vibe seems good for a W (Marriott), JdV (Hyatt) or Kimpton (IHG). One step off from the most premium brand (Ritz, St. Regis, Park Hyatt, etc.)
