In Frankfurt I had to walk almost 2km between connections. That's the longest walk I can remember.

Is this a self connect? Because it looks like a Terminal 1 to 2 connection, which is probably a Star Alliance to something else connection, which would result in longer transits, but I think there is a train that you could've taken. Larger airports would also have longer walks because planes got to park somewhere, but for an airport of Calgary's size, they built the international terminal that a Westjet domestic to international connection could involve a walk from literally one end of the airport to another.

I’ve done this from the end of A to the end of D, speed walking and arriving breathless and sweaty. Wasn’t fun!

It was a Star Alliance transfer Lufthansa from Amsterdam to Discover to Calgary. Like you said, it was an equivalent of A to D transfer at YYC, including leaving the EU and going to the International Terminal. I don't think the train was an option because of the requirement to leave the EU and then go through security again to enter the international terminal.

Oh my bad, that's not terminal 2, it's just at the edges of terminal 1, quite an unlucky connection. FRA is a 63M a year airport though, and we do about 20M. Aircraft movements will be closer since we're a domestic vs international hub, so there needs to be more gates per passenger volume. Hopefully whatever they do can make the connection at YYC easier. I'm hoping for a faster moving walkway. Doesn't need to be anything groundbreaking, and I'm not sure if it's an accessibility thing, but HK escalators move so much faster, vs here, often you can walk faster than the automated walkway.
