I wonder if this is a play to get some of the air cargo business from YYC? Right now, YYC does about 75% of Alberta's air cargo. Maybe that imbalance is because YEG doesn't currently have enough facilities?

I wonder how it will work out for YEG, it is one thing to break ground on servicing the area but another for businesses to actually start using it.
They’re not building all of it at once. The idea is to get started on it and build more if needed. Part of it is hope that if you build it they will come, part of it is Edmonton being involved in a lot of this government defense work and they’ll potentially need some cargo expansion. Alberta air cargo business in general will be busy and both cities will have enough cargo business to keep them busy.

Makes a lot of sense distance wise if we're trying to increase trade with Asia.
TBH the shorter distance isn’t enough to make a difference. Once the cargo lands it needs to be distributed and Calgary is the warehousing and distribution capital of the prairies - by a long shot.
The Edmonton cargo is more to related with defense work and the hope of bringing in some extra business. It won’t be fully built out to what they are showing in the article. It’ll be a while before it gets to that stage.
