The first double decker aircraft to touch down in the Canadian market arrives at Pearson International Airport June 1, when Emirates Airline introduces the Airbus A380 to its regular Dubai-Toronto service. Emirates Airline has 58 more A380s on order.

March 17, 2009 09:27 AM - The first double decker aircraft to touch down in the Canadian market arrives June 1 when Emirates Airline introduces the Airbus A380 to its regular Dubai-Toronto service.
The huge plane will make its first landing at Pearson International Airport in Malton on that date.
"We are extremely pleased to provide the A380 for our Dubai-Toronto service, which has had consistently strong demand since the three-times weekly route was launched in October 2007," Emirates President Tim Clark said in a press release today.
"In fact, the demand has been so high, it will only allow Emirates to address some of the unmet need of the Toronto market," he said.
The introduction of the new plane comes a century after the first manned flight took place in Canada.
Despite a troubled economic climate, which has hit the airline industry particularly hard, Clark said Emirates recently hired its 500th employee for its Canadian operation.
"Despite the current economic difficulties, this is good news for the Canadian economy," Clark said. "We believe you need a long-term view. By adding this new ultra-efficient aircraft to Toronto, we are increasing trade and tourism capacity, but the three-flights-a-week restriction remains a disappointment."
Dubai has been one of Canada's fastest-growing export markets in recent years and the airline has been lobbying Ottawa air transportation authorities for additional access to Pearson for a decade.
The airline is adding a fifth A380 to its arsenal to serve the Canadian market.
The luxurious plane has 14 "suites" in its first-class section and 76 "lie-flat" seats in its business section. The lower deck features 339 economy seats.
"Passengers are in for a treat when they fly on the Emirates A380," said Nigel Page, Emirates Senior Vice President of Commercial Operations, The Americas.
"The aircraft features shower spas in the first class cabin, an onboard lounge and our services include an extensive menu of multi-course meal options, created by top international chefs as well as ... over 1200 channels of entertainment," said Page.
Emirates is owned by the government of Dubai.

june 1 but at what time? i wanna see this thing!

Well I guess you could always check what time the flight arrives on June 1. Although I'm sure closer to the date, we'll know more specifics.

I will most definitely be there when it lands! Thanks for the info.

Respectfully,
Josef

Places like Dubai and Singapore aren't built by people who stick to traditional economic models. Emirates and Singapore airlines are extentions of a central branding marketing machine used to project positive characteristics about their city-states to the world. It really doesn't matter if it makes any sense to fly this new plane. That it is new and they are the first and the service will be good is all that matters. The fact that we and local media everywhere is and will talk about it when the planes land with the sparkling name of Singapore or Emirates painted on the side of the plane more than makes up for such incidental issues as plane loads.

Emirates is quite profitable actually. And so is Singapore Airlines. They don't have to operate short-haul domestic routes at all for city-states. That's what allows them to focus solely on the more profitable medium and long-haul international routes. Morover, both Singapore and the UAE are very convenient transit points which means there is high demand for the routes. I am quite sure that Emirates could fill 3 A380 flights here every week. Emirates is very popular with those traveling to South Asia. And the opportunity to change in Dubai instead of London or Paris or Frankfurt is very attractive. So I don't think its just media. There is demand for this route and Emirates will make a pretty penny on it. It's too bad that Air Canada hasn't serviced the UAE before despite the demand. AC's loss is Emirates/Etihad's gains.

I love it when they trumpet the benefits of first class. I haven't travelled on 1st in years and that was when most airlines offered free or nearly free upgrades for frequent flyers. First is what, about 3 times the cost of coach?

Emirates Airline Makes Canadian Aviation History With Arrival of First Scheduled Airbus A380 Service to Toronto
TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 16, 2009) - One hundred years after the first manned flight in Canada, Canadian aviation history again will be made when an Emirates airline Airbus A380 lands at Pearson International Airport in Toronto on June 1, 2009. The airline's double-decker aircraft will be the first to enter the Canadian market....

KEiThZ:
It seems your understanding of EK's operation is a little simplistic especially when you talk about how AC is missing out on all this traffic. I just flew with EK on the YYZ-DXB flight four times in the last two months and when I disembarked in Dubai I didn't see many people in the baggage claim from my flight except for a few taking advantage of a quick stopover.

There are maybe... MAYBE 6-12 people per EK flight from YYZ that are ending their journey in DXB (so approx 18-36 pax weekly). That leaves over 330 people connecting onto various other destinations from Dubai. Are you then saying that Air Canada should fly YYZ-DXB for those 6-12 people? How is that a sound business/operational model?

june 1 but at what time? i wanna see this thing!

EK241 DXB-YYZ
Scheduled arrival time: 15:45 (3:45PM)

I am glad to hear that the A380 will be coming here, but am I understanding this correctly, are they going to be using this plane in regular service to Toronto or just this once and maybe as demand increases?

June 1st eh- I will be there- i hope..meeting point?

Regular service... it will replace the existing B777-300ER that Emirates uses currently on their 3x weekly (Mon, Wed, Fri) service.

Hmmmmmm

Thanks for the heads up and I will circle June 1st on my calendar, It will probably land where the Airplane Spotters place is on Airport Road, so I expect that place to be crowded with people. I guess I have to be at that location fairly early to beat the crowd.
