Union makes up a tiny percentage of Yonge Line ridership, so the travel time from Langstaff to Union is irrelevant
??? Have you actually looked at the numbers? Union is one of the highest ridership stations. The third highest station in terms of boardings by far. https://cdn.ttc.ca/-/media/Project/...-accountability/Subway-Ridership-20232024.pdf

Travel time from Langstaff to Union may not be the one and only priority, but travel time to the largest employment centre in the GTHA is highly relevant, and consequently travel time in general is relevant. That includes trips to Union.

Why do people hand wave travel time and average speeds as being irrelevant and unimportant so often? All while wanting to cram more stations into North York, like Cummer, completely forgetting that most of those would-be riders are travelling to Downtown.

Much of the new office towers are near Union. CIBC Square and TD Terrace come to mind. RBC Waterpark place, Telus Harbour, One York.

The older RBC HQ is right outside Union.

Similar case with the other transit lines. "Travel time from Kennedy is irrelevant", "noone would travel from Kennedy to Mount Dennis/Cedarvale/Eglinton anyways".

45 min from Langstaff to Union on the GO train. Also less chance of being delayed due to one of 50 reasons.

Easily 65 with the subway.

To Bloor you would be better off taking the subway.

Doady is being pedantic - most passengers get off the subway between Dundas (err.. TMU) and King Station, and don't actually ride it all the way to Union.

Of course, that does not change the fact that run times on the Yonge line have creeped steadily upwards over the last decade.

Speaking of 2013 - that was the year I actually rode the Yonge line pretty frequently from Finch to Dundas Station - I recall that trip travel time pretty much aligning with the Lafferty.ca timetables at the time of 25 minutes from Finch to Dundas. I haven't ridden that stretch in many years at this point but by the sounds of it that trip is probably closer to 30 minutes today (20% slower!).

Total travel time from Langstaff/High Tech to Union will probably actually be about equal on the GO as on the TTC - but of course the TTC will be several dollars cheaper and with far higher frequencies and thus will likely be the preferred choice. Definitely not 65 minutes! The existing bus and subway route takes under an hour!

As others have said, many won't even be taking it all the way downtown either - though lots will, many others will be taking it only part of the way south. Langstaff to NYCC Station will be cut in travel time by about half from ~30 minutes to ~15.

The schedule used to be 30min to Union from finch. Now it's 45-55 min. Late night is faster.

I made a post in another thread showing 29 minutes is a pipe dream. Ever since the RSZ bonanza since 2023, as well as slower operations in general, irrespective of slow zones.
I would genuinely be astounded if someone can post a video of a Finch to Union or vice versa trip from 2023 onwards, taking only 29 minutes...

Here's a 33 minute run I just found, for the faster Finch to Union:

Compare to 29:40 from 2022 (before the 2023-24 slow zone bonanza):

Union to Finch is usually slower (it's more uphill?).

There are no slow zones right now, but 29 minutes is still a pipe dream.

In my own experience, NYC to Union is about 30 to 40 minutes.

I'll be going downtown again today, I can time it and report back.

Most of Yonge’s ridership comes from a mix of YRT riders at Finch, the east side of North York, and Scarborough. Most of these main routes on Steeles, Finch, Sheppard, Ellesmere/York Mills, and Lawrence have no other convenient option to transfer to besides Line 1.

That’s why by York Mills it could already be packed. But with the Ontario Line it could allow these riders to explore that option instead, with a mix of them using either Line 2 or Line 5 to transfer to it. This would then ease up the amount of traffic that’s fed from those lines to Line 1 currently as they have an earlier point to transfer from to get downtown.

This doesn’t even add the fact that the SSE and Stouffville Line would both help a lot in splitting the Scarborough ridership in up to 4 total options to getting downtown. Its not just the Ontario Line but all those other projects too that will help Line 1, and going from Langstaff to Union won’t be as busy as you might think when the extension finally opens alongside everything.

Went to Billy Bishop yesterday and came back today.

North York Centre to Union took just about 31.5 minutes. Which means from Finch it would've taken about 34-35 minutes. My trip started in the afternoon at XX:13:20PM instead of 07:02:12AM. Didn't start hitting the split button until Eglinton.

Note: my trip started at NYC, not Finch, and still took ~31.5 minutes. Starting from the future High Tech terminus, I expect 47 minutes assuming the same speed as NYC to Eglinton, and more likely 50 minutes since the stop spacing is narrower, and the curves are tight between Royal Orchard and Bridge.

Theoretically no reduced speed zones from North York Centre to Union, but travel times are still slower than scheduled:
