Random question if anyone is in the know:

Does anyone know if there's anything major planned for Chinook Centre in the future?

I recall they had some expansion plans/additional residential possibilities imagined at one point, but that was nearly a decade ago. This thought was triggered by visiting Chinook recently and it's remarkably busy, including the pedestrian bridge to the LRT. The food court is packed and feels cramped given the traffic, there's numerous other pinch points all over due to the high volumes of shoppers. With the Bay sites now vacant and housing in Calgary remaining relatively strong I would think that some ideas must be percolating at Chinook for expansions or renovations in the future?

Chinook is easily Calgary's premiere mall and must be the busiest one in sales and foot traffic, I'd imagine it will eventually evolve like the other major malls in Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal with expansions, residential and additional stuff keep being added to it. We have also seen a bunch of proposals and development nearby, including some reasonably large residential projects proposed - so some people are thinking the area should be evolving soon at least!
 
Malls in general are a dying breed. Wouldn't be surprised if online shopping and streaming are cutting into the business of the mall and theatre enough to limit any plans to expand the retail regardless of how busy it seems.. Hence why any expansion planned would likely be in the form of residential to boost the foot traffic around the mall.

Unfortunately, nothing at this time on the Chinook site itself. I wonder if CF are waiting to see how things shake out with The Bay before contemplating any redevelopment plans? I'd love to see some redevelopment happen with some residential towers on site and hopefully replacing all the surface parking with structured parking.

I think it's generally a time of uncertainty in the retail landscape which might be a reason nothing is happening at the moment.

It'd be great if these applications were for one of the empty parking lots along 17th ave. Not that the Denny's is a treasure, but it's already built into the urban fabric of 17th and I like having smaller individual buildings. Though The Fifth, replaced what was an older quirky building with a coffee shop, and from a retail side, the Fifth has been good for 17th.

I was looking at Chevron Plaza and I assume they're going to need to replace all the glazing. I wonder if they'll go for a reflective look like it has now.
