Thank god those two little old dinky buildings are being knocked down in favour of yet another new hotel tower. I was beginning to worry that there would be any proof that Calgary is more than 40 years old left - how embarrassing that would be...

On a more positive note, the design of both hotels is quite nice.

Re: mystery 17th ave hotel:

Looks like across the street from the Henry. I’d be upset about the loss of more historic buildings if they hadn’t been allowed to rot to such a degree, hopefully the Vine Arts block isn’t part of this. I’m sure with all of their sensitivity to historic architecture Truman will bulldoze it for parking or constrution staging.

Meanwhile the hideous black bunker on the corner with Purr in it is left unscathed..

A bit more information on this one:

The new, approximately 155-key Truman Tribute Hotel will bring a refined lifestyle hospitality offering to Calgary’s Beltline, strengthening the 17th Avenue corridor with a full-service urban hotel experience.

Located at 924 17th Avenue SW on an approximately 6,900 square foot site, the Truman hotel is planned as a 20-storey new-construction hotel featuring approximately 155 guestrooms and suites; a ground-floor lobby, registration, lobby bar and restaurant; dedicated meeting and function space with pre-function areas; fitness amenities; multiple food and beverage offerings; and a rooftop leisure experience with an infinity-edge pool, hot tub, bar, snack lounge and outdoor terrace overlooking the Beltline and downtown Calgary.

A hotel on 17th seems like a no-brainer. A much more enticing area to stay for non-business/convention focused visitors (and maybe for some of them too).

Not crazy about the height though. Would much prefer any tall stuff to be a block removed.

Looks good so far. They usually follow through with brick, so even if they cheap out on the glass it’ll still be good quality looks-wise. This is exactly what we need on 17 Avenue. I hope they have a port cochere and all that on the 16 Ave side. Would also make the residents of the Royal and patrons of the Save-On happy to have the dumpster alley gone.

I like it, but why not tear down the Less 17 building and incorporate it in as well? It'll just look odd and probably won't ever be developed, being such a small lot wedged in between two other buildings.
