In a just world, the next sitting government will MZO down the towers and leave the elder structures standing. Not too many with good tastes would show up to protest that...

From the above:
Judging from the images alone, I'm mostly...indifferent? I'm glad the heritage structures and ground level footprints will remain relatively as is. I imagine those towers will mostly be obscured by their more visually interesting neighbours. My hope is this will also activate that stretch of Eastern a bit more (and am very sad that Lisbon Hotel didn't survive).

While I might not be quite as harsh as @Amare I have to say I find the proposal far too overbearing relative to the heritage and public space. That's more about floor plate and setbacks than height, though a modest trim of the latter wouldn't hurt any....

I also think the architectural expression is mediocre and a poor fit. I often like sleek black as a modern contrast against heritage.

But here, the dark tone of the original brick, really calls out for some warmth in the contrasting expression. I'm not saying it has to be brick, or some garish colour like lemon yellow..... however, a warm toned trim, against deep black, with a warm toned soffit, where applicable would be preferable to what we're seeing.

Lisbon hotel wasnt right for the neighborhood. It needs more casual food options. Fancy cocktail bar wasn't the right vibe

I really wanted to like Lisbon Hotel and gave it multiple tries, but the drinks weren't that great and neither was the food. They were supposed to be open as a cafe by day, but every time I wanted coffee during the morning/day they were never open.

That said, it was the place where I first tried an olive and actually liked it. I'll always remember it for that.

I do hope the boost of density from this development improves the retail situation in WDL. It's pretty weak and it seems like most of the places struggle to survive based on the turnover.

Yea its pretty bleak but hoping things pick up. The good places do well. Tabule and Dark Horse have been there since the beginning doing well. Le Beau is killing it as well.

I was probably only in 4-5 times, but I like the small plate food options and cocktails at Lisbon. And I found the bill to always come in less than I was expecting (can't say the same for Le Beau).

I thought the cocktails were inventive and well priced and that the small plates were fantastic given the incredibly limited space in which the chef had to work.

There were some staffing issues -- at some point they let go a very popular manager and it was never as well patronized afterward.

Overall, I think the concept was great and can absolutely work for the neighbourhood when it is more fully built out.
