Apart from the green space, there is a large and pretty great playground for kids, the Crown Fountain (which acts like a giant splash pad during the summer), a pavillion for live music, and the Gehry-designed pedestrian bridge. It also connects with the Art Institute. I've been multiple times, and I think if you wanted to, you could pretty easily spend an entire day in MP or the immediate area.
All true but it is empty for several months in the winter. I’ve stopped using US examples as Canadian cities are in a different/better place.

Millennium Park is about ten times the size of Toronto's rail deck area. That's what makes Chicago's rail deck park so impressive. We really don't need to spend public money trying to make a pale imitation of it.
The USRC is ~37 hectares. We could crush Millennium Park if we wanted to.

reminds me a lot of the Takanawa Gateway City in Tokyo, which I recently visited, in terms of urban typology.

basically a series of towers built upon elevated pedestrian platforms next to a rail line.

the lesson learned for me? it's kinda cool and utopian when your up there, but it's completely disconnected from the ground plane

I appreciate the use of brick at grade level and not just a glass wall like most condos do. I wish the rest of the project had more expression and geometry to it. It is so basic in its geometry and architectural expression, up close they may look sleek if the cladding quality is good, but from afar they read as place holder boxes with no design. They will add nothing to the skyline. The park aspect of it has potential but the spaces feel mostly like walkways than actual parks. Overall I’m not impressed at all, but we have to admit it’s a big improvement over the barren tracks we have today.

What a fantastic movie. Eric Bogosian (Uncut Gems, Succession) and Katherine Heigl in some early roles. Ryback seems to have put on some weight in the ensuing 30 years though...

I'll never hear enough Steven Seagal stories from his time hosting SNL. He's so full of himself that they don't even sound real 😅

Bad use of money though. The additional height over USRC (where elevated) would reduce Lake views for pedestrians at-grade. Elevated Parks aren't functional without easy access, which the grade hinders, and would mean escalators and elevators at multiple locations. All that and vegetation would have to be stripped off completely every 30-40 years in order to re-do the membranes (waterproofing)

We're much better off expanding Lakefront Parks, removing Bayview south of Gerrard and buying up the car dealerships there to create a 10+ acre park next to the Don, and other comparable investments.

So I'm going to be *that* guy and say that the greatest version of Pelham is the 1974 original, One Two Three, not the wretched remakes (1,2,3). Bogosian was also brilliant in Talk Radio.

How so?

This is the exact same proposal we've look at before, but with pretty pictures from a reputable architect. Nothing else has changed here, at this point. The remainder of the site was only ever discussed as a City Park, paid for by the City, which is not happening.
Is it the same? I see this is a very scaled back version. it no longer is covering the entire corridor just the bathurst yard portion.
Here i dont see an intention to deck over it all which was the case originally

The developer never had any intention of paying for decking over the entire corridor, not even the slightest notion.

It was simply suggested as something the City could choose to pay to do itself.

Which is not and never was happening.

Agreed on those suggestions, just suggesting we have range to work. I don't think lake views and vertical challenges can be used to dismiss the concept between at least Bathurst and Jarvis, given the current state of the adjacent urban fabric. It could extend eastwards with the buildout of the East Bayfront.

If a private developer wants to build it, at their own cost, as a POPs, more power to them.

But the cost of a decked park will exceed 100M per hectare, including access features, and not including any 'air rights' fees.

To my mind that just isn't justified for the type and quality of park it would deliver.

I'd much rather have University Park.

Goodness, he's almost as..er, "long" as he is tall. >.<

Agreed, and I have argued the same. I'm of the long view that it's inevitable at some point. Certainly not a priority now, but we should start future-proofing for it, and seriously look at it in 2-3 decades.
