Apparently the AHL team's name has been leaked and it is going to be the Hammers. Ugh --- I hate it. I was hoping for Mustangs.
It was interesting hearing the developer speak and argue that they are fitting within the definition of institutional that the previous zoning had allowed. It felt very much like a presentation that was setting up a good case for appeal. I assume they will go through the appeal process and perhaps also request for a zoning change, though I doubt any councilor would want to touch this until after the election. Regardless, I don't expect much movement on this until 2027 at this point.Only because there is no thread for 337 Gage Avenue N, I'll comment here. If someone makes a thread, feel free to move my comment;
The request for "minor" adjustments to allow the move of the Salvation Army to Gage Avenue was denied at the Committee of Adjustment today.
Interesting, and worth note, the reason for denial appears to be largely political pressure and lack of "fit" (the second test) rather than a review of the adjustment requests made under the other 3 tests. This is only worth noting, as many comments made noted the requests were not minor in nature, and the CoA basically fully disregarded that and focused on the second test. Being the second test, it cannot be satisfied because the address is unmovable.
This means a different location must be found.
The frustrating thing is that the CoA didn't really provide what a good or desirable location would be according to the body. It can seemingly not be near residential uses, nor industrial uses, nor institutional uses, nor too far from transit services, and must provide parking for employees.
It's, in my opinion an impossible set of requirements to meet.
I don't like the name and I think the logo looks way too generic. The Forge do the hammer thing much better.The logo's decent. The nickname feels lazy.
It doesn't bother me though, since it's just a team that's associated with another city. I'd have a bigger problem with it if it was the name of a purely Hamilton team (ie. PWHL, OHL, etc.).
