You haven't given an example of a sports facility that had a strictly exterior reno... anyway, not important.
Why does it have to be exterior only? There are plenty of examples of sports facilities doing a reno of the interior and exterior... which could be TD Coliseum as well. Does it matter that the interior was done first, and then exterior later? Other facilities spent money on exterior renos when they didn't have to - could've just left it at interior only since, as you put it, it serves no purpose than just aesthetics. They just chose to do them both at the same time.

I would consider the video screen addition to be a functional rather than aesthetic upgrade, and certainly not a reno. The building looks essentially the same before and after.
To be fair, they also added an entire section of building. Not a major aesthetic change but it definitely looks different. To the original point, There could easily be a point down the road where a similar improvement is made to the Coliseum that changes the look of the exterior as well.

This particular renovation was primarily focused on the interior.

Someone brought up the idea of an exterior reno.

It is not likely that that happens any time soon on its own. And any future large-scale interior/exterior reno of this building is decades away, if it ever even happens.

So: I wouldn't bank on the building looking very different any time soon. Or not so soon. Or maybe ever.

Fair enough. I think they did mention "exterior (along with interior)" but it's not important. I'm just happy there's an arena that can host large scale events as an alternative to Toronto. Hoping for lots of success and selfishly maybe a WWE event or two as it would be nice to make the trip in from Burlington and it be a tad less busy of a city.

Cool cool :)

The WWE is heading to Buffalo and to Montreal for different events in January. I don't know.if anything else local and/or in Canada is coming up
