Some updates:

The gantry crane is absolutely massive.

At Ontario Line community meetings preceding construction, Metrolinx assured the community, including my colleagues at Osgoode Hall, that at least 10ft of the west lawn would be preserved during construction. Up until and including the most recent community notice, this has roughly been the illustration of the site:

Anybody visiting the site can see that this is not the case. The "storage area" extends north to close off that lawn. It's a "storage area" for private vehicles. The promised "10 feet" from Osgoode Hall has been incrementally closed off and is now guarded by Toronto Police 24/7.

The progression of revocation of Metrolinx's promise of access over a few months:

@kotsy you've taken photos of this site from the sky before. Next time you have your drone out there, may I request a survey of the condition of this area to compare with the illustration Metrolinx claims in community notices to be the space dedicated to the public? They're full-on lying and they should be held accountable to the community.

Following up on the issue of the west lawn that was supposed to remain accessible by the community, I've been pestering Metrolinx Community Relations about that side yard and they found a way to turn it into the primary path for pedestrians from Osgoode Garden to University. The gap that was there between the excavation site and the storage yard made no sense as they had to have a traffic person there to stop pedestrians while there was truck movement between sites.

Before*:

*This was the "planned" garden around the storage site but in practice it was taken up entirely by storage.

This will disappear:

Pedestrians will go along a new path being built alongside Osgoode Hall (right), instead of through a path between the excavation and storage sites (left):

Here's the path being built as seen from north of the site (near the provincial court fountains).

Hopefully they'll maintain the lawn and add plants along the path. This is going to remain here for 4-5 years, might as well make it pretty.

Correction: they’re keeping both sides open. Metrolinx is constructing a tunnel/hoarding while the garden path is being built by Osgoode Hall.

There’s a wall at the end of the path so not sure if they’re going to remove it or route it around somewhere else.

This garden path will make it a lot more tolerable to have to walk through here for the next 4-5 years. It completely bypasses the construction and the "temporary" painted sidewalk on the road that looks like is staying for the duration.

No pictures but I walked by and the entire south wall is now enclosed. They seemed to be preparing the roof next. @kotsy final call for a drone shot of the site before it's enclosed for the next 4-5 years.

While no more bird's eye views for the duration, we might get some peeks into the excavation since there'll be 4 truck doors. One entering on Queen Street where the streetcar stop used to be and exiting onto University at Queen and then another set of doors, one from the north storage yard and exiting onto University on the north end of the site.

The gantry crane is up and moving on its rails!

In this second photo, you can see where the Queen Street truck entrance will be.

There might be a reprieve for photos of the excavation after all. A Metrolinx Community notice says that excavation will begin before enclosing the tent. They're digging 17 metres into soft soil before the real noise begins with breaking through bedrock starting in November.
