It's all gone.

The second I took this photo, a security guard approached and said that I couldn't take photos because it was "private property".

So I took a step back to the sidewalk and took another photo and pointed out that I was on public property. Then he asked why I was taking photos of construction and a staggering question hung in the air: who is the bigger weirdo? The person taking photos of a demolished gas bar or the person guarding the demolished gas bar from people trying to take photos of it?

I mentioned similar weird encounters apparently happening near Rogers Stadium in Downsview.

I'm not really sure what the issue would be. Maybe they think people are checking out the site to see if it has anything worth stealing? But then maybe they should put up a high fence with opaque barriers if (in their mind) there's a reason to stop people looking.
It is nonsensical that they want to try to stop people from taking photos of sites that are clearly visible to the general public from outside of the fence.

Sounds like a chicken and egg thing to me...but it's really odd to have people posted out to try and discourage documentation of construction sites...theyre ubiquotious in a city, especially in the calibre of Toronto which remains a construction juggernaut.

I think it's mainly a case of low paid, front-line workers who aren't even sure what they're supposed to be doing but want to be seen doing a good job because most of their time involves sitting around scrolling on their phones. They're probably happy that something unusual is happening because it breaks up the boredom. I get it, but it's also annoying on my end.
