The elevators are already set up, all through the building, to service only residential suites above the hotel. There's just no way to simply squeeze another elevator shaft in (and likely more than one would be needed) after-the-fact, and no way to redo the elevator lobbies to separate the access areas for an observation deck from the resident lobbies. All of that was cast in concrete long ago. Not that an observation deck would have been bad here, it would have been great!

I imagine that elevator access for residents being already at a premium, that they would lose one to a public observation deck would be unthinkable here.

I don't think this tower would have been built any quicker if the financing of it all worked out. In fact, it probably would have taken longer because they would be to want to build this to 94 stories. So history is the likely the reason why this tower is being topped out this year as opposed to next.

Hey - where did that mezzanine go???

It's not just a case of taking away an elevator to service an observation deck (and assuming the deck were successful, there's no way only one elevator would suffice). As I said earlier, you would also need to separate the elevator lobbies to keep deck traffic away from residential traffic, so there would need to be an entirely new space to act as deck reception that simply does not exist. What's being asked for would have needed to have been planned years ago.

There are other tall proposals in the area (including next door, in fact, where they are actually planning to go higher). Those buildings could be planned in advance to have a deck if the developers wanted. It would be good if one of them did. Before the 1200 Bay plans were shelved, there was to be a restaurant at the top of it. In the meantime, you can always book a reservation atop the Manulife Centre, and its view is no slouch.

So the the slow-out-the-gate turtle of One Bloor West finally beat out the sprinting rabbit of Pinnacle One in the race to the 300 mark...folks will be glad I wasn't taking bets on this. <3
Well good thing they only had to put up I beams to do it and didn't have to pour concrete, otherwise it probably would have taken them a couple more months. 🥴

In any case as they say; it may have won the battle, but ultimately it will lose the war. 😼

They still left the lifting lug on the beam. Maybe it’s temporary and will be removed pending other work in the area.

I said several times that there is no race here. Nice to have a supertall in Canada now. :D

Yep and a future landmark. This thing is an eye catcher, last week i was working in the area at Yonge St & Bloor, and every time i stopped to look up at it, I noticed other people took notice of this monster too. I heard some guys near me at the crosswalk, maybe tourists or just clueless locals, wondering if this was an office building or condo? I told them what it was. They were just as impressed by the building as us skyscraper nerds.

It’s surprising to us that even locals often have no idea about buildings we get excited about. Goes to show just how small our bubble is. A few weeks ago, I saw a Facebook post (feed, not from someone I know) on 1 Yonge. One of the commenters actually said ‘do people really care about skyscrapers?’ LOL.

To be clear, this was for those who did think it was some kind of competition, which is fine. Not for those who didn't think it was, which is fine also. 😸

Just so it's absolutely clear... here's the excerpt from Tridel's Official Press Release

One Bloor West is officially Canada’s first supertall building (a label reserved for buildings above 300 metres), becoming the latest and most striking addition to Toronto’s skyline in over a generation. This will make it the tallest residential building in the country to date and the second tallest man-made structure, next to the CN Tower. Once complete, One Bloor West will stand at 308.6 metres — or 85 storeys.

A remarkable feat of engineering and vertical scale, One Bloor West reflects Toronto’s rapid urban evolution while showcasing what’s possible when vision, innovation, and dedication come together, One Bloor West is both a celebration of form and height, setting a new benchmark for urban development in Canada. Construction continues to progress steadily, with major structural milestones now complete and interior work soon to advance across multiple levels.

“As the first supertall in the country, One Bloor West marks a pivotal moment not just for Toronto, but all of Canada,” said Jim Ritchie, President and CEO of Tridel. “We are moving into a new era of development, marked by a level of ambition and engineering excellence not previously seen before. We’re proud to be part of the team delivering a new landmark to Toronto’s skyline and look forward to future buildings joining One Bloor West’s supertall status.”

No doubt is the first supertall in Canada. But "this will make it the tallest residential building in the country to date and the second tallest man-made structure, next to the CN Tower" is a rather strange statement. Why use the future tense when it ALREADY is both of these things (by surpassing FCP)? And yet when it's completed and occupied, it will be none of these (surpassed by Sky Tower).
