This flower was a very polular choice by the city along the stretch of Don Road to Booth Avenue, especially along the median on Lake Shore Blvd East.

It is already blooming...

The flowers in bloom are Daffodils.

Very pretty, early spring flower, perennial, non-native, but not very invasive.

One thing about daffodils to keep in mind they are quite toxic if ingested, both to humans and dogs.

The bulb is the most toxic in concentration, (they're fine to touch, briefly); but ingestion at any quantity could give you everything from nausea/vomiting, to the runs.........to abdominal cramps and in rare, but documented cases cardiac arrhythmia.

Excessive touching, w/o gloves could give you 'daffodil itch' from the sap. It's not poison ivy, but it's not so much fun either.

I don't object to these, though the focus was supposed to be on natives here, so I hope most of the rest is native. Stuff in flower in nature right now, includes Blood Root, Marsh Marigold, Yellow Downy Violet, and the odd Trillium has bloomed.

Of those, Bloodroot would be among the more appropriate here.

They are blooming fiercely now on the Lake Shore Blvd East median, between the Don Road and Booth Avenue. Taken this morning...

They seem very slow with the sidewalk and cycle path on the north side of Lake Shore from Booth to Carlaw.

Thanks! Although the attention is on the western parks, I am wondering if this area is actually going to develop sooner!

And squirrels stay away from the bulbs due to their toxic characteristics.Mix them in with your other bulbs to help keep the pesky grey squirrels at bay.

Daffys are an introduced species, as are so many of our garden bulbs, but being amongst the earliest bloomers, and traditionally a cheeky yellow, who can not but appreciate their early appearance in a drab landscape.

TE32.47 - Lake Shore Boulevard East Landscape Plan

Consideration Type: ACTIONSchedule Type: DelegatedWard: 14 - Toronto - Danforth
Attention
This item has not yet been added to the agenda. The Committee must vote to add this item as new business before it can be debated. Any person wishing to speak will only be heard if the item is added to the agenda.

Origin

(April 29, 2026) Letter from Councillor Paula Fletcher

Recommendations

Councillor Paula Fletcher recommends that:

1. Toronto and East York Community Council request the General Manager, Transportation Services, in consultation with relevant City Divisions and Waterfront Toronto, to report back on the following items to the July 8 and 9, 2026 meeting of the Toronto and East York Community Council:

a. an assessment of how the landscape treatment for Lake Shore Boulevard East, west of Carlaw Avenue, will align with the existing landscape treatment east of Carlaw Avenue, as designed by DTAH and delivered as part of the early-2000s Gardiner Expressway removal, including, but not limited to the following:

1. multi-use trails,

2. lighting fixtures,

3. trees and planting, and

4. public art elements;

b. confirm whether the Variable Message Sign was included as part of the approved or proposed landscape plan, or provide a rationale and explanation of when the Variable Message Sign was introduced and its design and operational considerations separate from the landscape plan; and

c. input from Waterfront Toronto on whether a Variable Message Sign would be desirable and appropriate within the landscape plan associated with the current Gardiner Expressway removal project from west of Carlaw Avenue to Cherry Street.

Summary

The removal of the Gardiner Expressway created a grand boulevard along Lake Shore Boulevard East from Don Roadway to Leslie Street, with the first phase completed under a public realm plan designed by DTAH.

As future phases move forward, including the construction of a multi‑use trail connection to close the existing gap between Cherry Street and the Don River bridge, there is an opportunity to review the public realm and ensure continued consistency with the award‑winning DTAH design established through the original Gardiner takedown.

The presence of a large Variable Message Sign (VMS) within this corridor should also be reassessed as part of this work, to determine whether it remains appropriate within the context of long‑term public realm investments and design objectives.

Does anyone know what been made next to Cherry St and the Keating Channel?? Some sort of manufacturing of a there leg platform

We were discussing it here recently.
Thanks as I was trying to figure how to tag my photos for then that I shot last Sunday while shooting some of the area.

Never noticed the temporary parking lot off Commissioner for the new park that will hold less than 100 cars with on street pay parking still cover up. Never noticed the parking lot in February when I did some nighttime shooting for the area.

The bike lane between Booth Avenue and the Don Roadway on Lake Shore Blvd East is still pending but fresh soil is down and leveled out.

Facing west from Booth:

And they have started paving the sidewalk and framing the bike lane between Booth Avenue and Carlaw.

Facing east from Booth:

A link has also been created between the bike path and sidewalk between Booth and the Don Roadway on the North Side...

They have also started planting trees on the North Side of Lake Shore Blvd East, from the Don Roadway, eastward.

Some of them are already showing life...
