I got called into work this morning and took TTC home. I entered the secondary entrance at Leaside (NW corner at Bayview). It's a lot of steps down to the mezzanine. The train came with a minute, and the ride one stop to Laird was smooth. The train was pretty full with some standees (around 11:15).

The exit at Laird was similarly deep, but simple with the escalators.

One comment on the seating. I think it may be better to use sideways-facing seating along the windows in the middle segment (without doors) to improve walking flow.

N=1: successful first ride

The issue is that this is a fairly strict limitation of Low Floor LRVs - you have to put the bogeys and the wheel wells somewhere. The transverse seating exists not because the manufacturer wanted more seats, but because the space is completely unsuitable for standing room in the first place.

Edit: Just to be clear I'm not saying that you can't find a more space efficient design that squeezes a bit more floor space, just that you're not that far from the theoretical limit and there's only so much you can get out of it - especially if certain alternatives such as using 70% low floor model with steps in the train are a non-starter.

I arrived at Eglington at about 8:15 and took the first train that arrived which turned out to be the eastbound. So I took it to Don Mills, then turned back went to .Mt Dennis and back with a stop for a much needed Coffee at Forest Hills.

The positives:
The underground stations look mostly good. I wouldn't say great though
The connection to UP express is very good. Its not a long distance to walk and its very accessible. You are indoors right up until the last door that lands you onto the UPX platform
The access to the Line 6 platform from Eglington is good as well
The speeds and travel times between Mt Dennis and Eglington look acceptable.
The the rides are smooth and the interior of the cars is OK but its obviously a streetcar running underground, therefore limited seating & not roomy. Not that we didn't already know this already.

The negatives:
It was freezing cold even in the deep underground stations like Eglington
Little details. Wayfaring could be better. had to look hard to make sure i was boarding the training going to the right direction. No network map was visible from inside the trains.
The escalators were out of service at Forest Hills and it was a long climb of stairs in some stations
The only outdoor station that i saw (Sunnybrook park) had terrible shelter. No way would I wait in this weather for a streetcar in that kind of shelter

Conclusion:
There are no surprises to me, Line 5 and 6 are just as I envisioned 15 years ago. I always believed that this line (unlike line 6 - FWLRT) would have some value to commuters, the city and the economy. But its a Jekyll and Hyde line, and to reinforce what an earlier contributor said, anything east of Don Mills has no added value to the city and its users and hence I have no intentions of every using that service east of Don Mills. I will drive instead. I like the idea of splitting it. But the great thing with this line is that you can get to the airport in a reasonable time, connect to some GO service and it connects to both sides of Line 1. As I said before, this service is like the Montreal Olympics, it will be remembered as a financial fiasco but will leave a more positive legacy. Its value will be realized in the longer term whereas line 6 has no such value in the long term and (although much less costly), line 6 its is worst usage of public funds because there is no short term economic value enhancement and no prospect for Long term economics value.

This will get lost in the opening day commentary perhaps, but - on my way to Mount Dennis today, I was impressed by just how quickly the elevated section west of Mount dennis is coming along.
I wasn’t going to leave the warm car for more than a second to get good shots, but there is certainly lots happening in that stretch.
The impact on the river valley seemed pretty trivial, maybe fans of elevated trznsit guideways will have a positive local case study to point at shortly .

Ps - there used to be a separate thread for the extension project?

Cedarvale has the same doors as well. And I really think it only exists cause Metrolinx wanted to make it clear that Line 5 was their property, even if it's a TTC line, and make it ''seperate'' from Line 1/2.
It's probably because of a change in fire codes and also with it being a new building added to an existing one. It's like how when you go from one building to another in the path you have to go through a set of doors.
