Go to any other CadFair managed mall and there’s plenty of seating. The few measly benches in the main section of Eaton Centre are full of people with their butts hanging on the side.

They don’t want any of the downtown denizens spending any time in the mall if they aren’t actively spending money. I hate what the mall has become in the last two decades.

It's an architecturally soulless dump of an entrance - the whole thing screams early 2000s cheap. If the original complex was inspired by Victor Emmanuel II Galleria, this addition would be fin-de-siecle suburban bland. I suppose it's a slight improvement over the ahistorical PoMo along Yonge, with an emphasis on slight.

Blame the city for letting junkies ruin the city while the rest of taxpayers suffer the consequences.

Security guards immediately chase out anyone who looks slightly scruffy. They don't need to accomplish that through depriving people of seating.

Exactly - it is a business choice not to have seating in most areas of the mall, just like they chose to have seating in the food court (where there is an economic imperative in providing such). The junkies/blame the city argument is bunk.

Update on Uniqlo construction: It's a full renovation. It's happening in stages and they're revealing a new store in September, around the time Simons and Eataly are supposed to open.

I hope they improve on this:

It boggles the mind to have such a prominent location then close it up with walls and displays. Uniqlo has a coffee shop on the second floor of their Fifth Avenue, New York location. The same could be done here, overlooking the Yonge & Dundas atrium. This place used to have such life to it with its terraced cafes.

BMO also plastered off its view and Cadillac Fairview will go to great lengths to omit any seating whatsoever in this space, so people just sit on ledges and the floor. Sheer incompetence.

They've been gradually making it worse in different increments ever since the days of this:

Indeed..people need to stop reading Rebel News and Post Media

Can we stop with these foolish "junkie" comments on UT? Is this really the conversations we want to be having on this forum? Honestly if folks want to troll these threads with Sun media like comments, can they go somewhere else? I'm genuinely interested in a discussion around how the Eaton Centre could be more friendly and welcoming with better design and seating. I've no idea what "Blame the city for letting junkies ruin the city while the rest of taxpayers suffer the consequences." adds to the conversation.

it is not good for business to have street entrances where junkies can easily get in and out with stolen good and it is not a good business idea to offer seating outside of the food court where junkies will also loiter

You're done. Any more on this topic will be considered trolling, and posts will be deleted and privileges revoked.
