Hillsdale Avenue Park Expansion & Redesign

Hillsdale Avenue Park is being expanded as a result of a new residential development in the neighbourhood. The City will be engaging with community members to ensure the park design meets the needs of the community.

Project Timeline

  • Summer 2021: Community engagement and design development
  • Late Summer to Early Fall: Hire construction team
  • Fall 2021: Construction begins
  • Late Winter 2021: Construction complete
The timeline is subject to change.

As part of residential developments in the neighbourhood, the former Hillsdale Avenue Parkette is being expanded to a new 1150 m2 park on Yonge Street, south of Soudan and north of Hillsdale Road.

The City is working on the design and construction of the new park, which will include:

  • Seating areas and benches
  • An accessible walkway connecting Soudan and Hillsdale Avenues along the western boundary of the site
  • Horticultural pollinator plantings
The park concept will be developed through consultation with key stakeholders and the wider community. Surface materials and benches for all concept options are to be determined.

I posted on this project in the Midtown thread awhile back, with some of my thoughts on the preliminary designs:

This project feels like it got so many things right, from the memorable and refined architecture to the multi-storey retail with storefronts along the main street.

Time to revisit this one, but not for a good reason.............I passed by here, yesterday, August 20th, 2025, in the course of my walk south along Yonge......and we need to discuss the streetscaping!

First, this is what the Yonge Street effort looks like:

Depending on the planter, you have a 50-75% attrition rate of the plants..............the mostly dead spaces have not seen so much as some mulch...........the 'temporary' irrigation system, which is likely dead as they aren't meant for more than 2-3 years of use is left exposed like so much litter.

This belongs to the City now........so perhaps one of you who lives nearby could 311 this.

You need to ask for removal of the irrigation.

Planting of the empty area, and fresh soil, fertilizer and mulch.

I'm afraid the trees on the side street aren't any better:

Of the 5 trees you can see, 2 are complete losses (dead), one is is severely distressed, and one is just distressed, almost certainly due to drought. The recent rains may yet salvage that one.

If 311'ing, just ask for all trees to be evaluated by an arborist with an eye to replacement of most of them.
